Newcastle United defender Dan Burn was taken to hospital for scans on a rib injury following the club’s 1–0 derby defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Burn was subbed off in the 42nd minute after sustaining the injury during a sliding challenge with Sunderland defender Nordi Mukiele. Mukiele’s knee appeared to make contact with Burn’s chest, and although the Newcastle centre-back initially continued after receiving treatment, he later went down again and was withdrawn. Mukiele was booked for the incident.

Speaking after the match, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe confirmed Burn had been sent for further medical checks and admitted there was immediate concern over his condition.

“He was struggling to breathe at half-time,” Howe told reporters.

In a separate television interview with Sky Sports, Howe added that the injury could be serious, even though the club were awaiting confirmation.

“Hopefully he’ll be OK,” Howe said. “But it’s a real problem.”

Burn’s potential absence would come at an incredibly bad portion of the schedule for Newcastle, who will face Fulham in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on Wednesday, followed by a matchup against top-four side Chelsea next weekend.

The 32-year-old has been a regular presence in Eddie Howe’s back line this season, and depth at left-sided centre-back is already an issue. Sven Botman has not started a match since the 3–1 defeat at Brentford on November 9 and has been managing a back problem, limiting Howe’s defensive options.

Further updates on Burn’s condition are expected once scan results are reviewed.
