🚨 Toluca crowned Liga MX Apertura champions with shootout win over Tigres

Toluca were crowned Liga MX Apertura champions after a simply crazy 12-round penalty shootout win over Tigres.

The triumph in the dramatic final sees Toluca become the first Mexican side to win back-to-back titles since 1996.

After Tigres traveled south with a one-goal lead in the tie, they stunned the home side in the opening 15 minutes when a André-Pierre Gignac free-kick deflected in off of Fernando Gorriarán, giving the visitors a two-goal aggregate lead amid a crestfallen Toluca crowd.

But despite their many attempts to waste time, Tigres' plan to sink in to their own half and kill the match backfired after Toluca picked up the momentum and pulled level thanks to two goals of their own.

A resurgent Helinho was at the heart of both Toluca goals, scoring and assisting to deliver parity on aggregate.

With both sides unable to find a winner in the 90 minutes, plus another 30 in extra-time, we headed to penalties to decide the champion.

In the shootout that took a staggering 12 rounds, an Ángel Correa miss allowed Alexis Vega to step up and play the hero to win the title for Toluca.
