The Hokies improve to 10-2, as Neo Avdalas leads the way with 16 points.
The Virginia Tech Hokies improved to 10-2 on the season Sunday with an 82-53 win over the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks.
The Hawks were competitive early, taking their first lead, 9-7, at the 15:32 mark of the first half. However, a layup from sophomore guard Ben Hammond two minutes later gave the Hokies an 11-10 lead that they would never relinquish. Virginia Tech spent the remainder of the half attempting to pull away. However, UMES hung tough. The Hokies finally had some breathing room, going on a 13-5 run to end the first half with a 38-29 advantage.
Much like we’ve seen several times this season, Tech pulled away with an impressive second-half performance. It was a 15-1 run in the final minutes that really blew things up in favor of the Hokies. Tech shot an impressive 54% from the field, including 11 of 24 (46%) from 3-point range.
Freshman guard Neoklis Avdalas led a balanced Tech scoring effort with 16 points. He also led the team with seven assists. Freshman big man Christian Gurdak came off the bench and contributed 13 points and eight rebounds. Junior forward Amani Hansberry was excellent again, scoring 12 points and leading the team with nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Tyler Johnson scored 12 for the Hokies, while Hammond finished with 10 points and four assists.
The Hokies have some time off before hosting Elon next Saturday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum. That will be VT’s last non-conference game before jumping straight into ACC play, where the Hokies will host Virginia on New Year’s Eve.
