Chelsea and Bayern Munich are said to be ‘leading the chase’ for Manchester United wantaway Kobbie Mainoo.

According to Chelsea News, relaying a new report from Caught Offside, the two European giants are among 12 clubs sizing up moves for the 20-year-old starlet.

Mainoo’s suitors will all be well aware that there’s an opportunity to prise him from Ruben Amorim’s ranks the longer he’s not playing regular football at Old Trafford.

Heading into tonight’s game against Bournemouth, he has accumulated only 183 minutes in the Premier League across the opening 15 matches.

The midfielder has yet to make a start and has spent four whole games watching on from the sidelines as an unused substitute.

Reports have continued to suggest that Mainoo will reaffirm his desire to leave when the window opens next month, having first requested to join another club on loan in the final week of the summer window.

His pleas ultimately fell upon deaf ears, as he was told to stay and fight for his place under Amorim.

There’s only so much he can do when United are playing just one game a week this campaign, though.

Last week, Paul Scholes — who previously hailed the player as ‘special’ —  and Nicky Butt were in agreement that they, at this stage, would advise Mainoo to leave United – even if it meant joining a direct English rival like Chelsea.

The two academy graduates feel aggrieved on the youngster’s behalf that such a pivotal time in his development and senior career is being wasted by Amorim, who prefers the out-of-form Manuel Ugarte over Mainoo.

It’s worth remembering that the 10-capped England international’s breakout season culminated with him scoring in the FA Cup final before lifting the trophy with his boyhood club, as well as representing the Three Lions throughout Euro 2024.
