West Ham United are plotting a move for Haji Wright, eager to reinforce a struggling squad, according to The West Ham Way.
The Hammers turned to Wright, who has bagged eight goals and an assist in 17 appearances, spearheading Coventry City to the top of the Championship table.
The report claims West Ham vice chair ‘Karen Brady has already begun negotiations to see whether any progress can be made.’
Wright has been pivotal as Coventry attempt to climb back into the top flight, and with the Hammers looking for inspiration, the ‘outstanding’ 27-year-old has emerged as a target.
His club reportedly values him at £20 million. The Hammers could decide to act on their ‘strong interest’ by pulling the trigger for the USA international.
Interestingly, his international teammate Josh Sargent has also been earmarked as a target for West Ham despite currently being sidelined by an injury.
Sargent has been talismanic for Norwich City, bagging 51 goals in 140 league appearances, attracting the attention of teams like West Ham.
He will also cost the Hammers around £20 million.
Both men are underwhelming, and West Ham should aim higher
West Ham’s reported interest in Wright and Sargent feels like quiet preparation for life back in the Championship. These are not bold, forward-thinking targets.
They are safe, familiar names plucked straight from the second tier, and that says everything about how low the bar has fallen at the London Stadium.
Wright is having a solid season for Coventry, but a £20m fee for a 27-year-old whose ceiling is already defined hardly screams ambition.
Meanwhile, Sargent’s last stint in the Premier League was laughable. He is injured and is hardly the centre-forward the Hammers need delivering consistently at the top level.
West Ham have been diabolical in the market for years, and doubling down on these average players would continue that trend.
If these are the solutions being lined up, you have to ask whether the club are planning survival or rehearsing relegation.
