Thomas Müller was welcomed back to Bayern Munich as a supporter on Sunday and left head of sport Max Eberl with earache during the 2-2 draw at home to lowly Mainz.

Fresh from losing the MLS Cup showdown to Inter Miami for his new team Vancouver Whitecaps, Müller returned to his former long-time club for a catch-up. The 36-year-old saw his boyhood team struggle against a side bottom of the table as Harry Kane's late penalty gave the Bundesliga leaders a draw.

"We joked a lot beforehand," Eberl said of Müller's visit to the VIP stand.

"Thomas is someone who talks a lot. During a game, I am someone who is rather quieter. So I had to adapt a little to the situation. But it was very funny and very pleasant."

Thanks to RB Leipzig's 3-1 defeat at Union Berlin on Friday, Bayern actually extended their lead at the top of the table to nine points.

"If someone had told me that after matchday 14 we would be nine points ahead of our main rival, we would all have said 'that's fantastic'," Eberl said.
