Barcelona suffer fresh concern as superstar forward ruled out of Copa del Rey opener

Barcelona’s preparations for the Copa del Rey opener have been dealt a notable setback, with fresh concerns emerging around Robert Lewandowski’s fitness. 

According to an update shared by Alfredo Martinez, the Polish striker did not take part in training with the rest of the squad due to hamstring discomfort and is now expected to miss the upcoming cup tie against CD Guadalajara.

The situation has been developing quietly over the past few days. Lewandowski was notably absent from the pitch during Barcelona’s La Liga clash against Osasuna, failing to play a single minute. 

While he did briefly warm up from the bench during the second half, his non-involvement raised questions at the time. 

The club has since clarified that the decision was precautionary, with discomfort preventing him from being risked unnecessarily.

Precautions with Lewandowski

This latest update effectively rules him out of the Copa del Rey fixture, a match that would normally have presented an ideal opportunity for rotation. 

With Villarreal awaiting Barcelona in a far more demanding league encounter on Sunday, the coaching staff are unwilling to take chances with one of their most experienced attackers.

Lewandowski’s situation also comes at a delicate moment internally. Under Hansi Flick, the striker is locked in a fierce battle with Ferran Torres for the starting role. 

The competition has intensified this season, with Flick placing heavy emphasis on form, intensity, and tactical suitability rather than reputation alone. 

Had Lewandowski been fully fit, the cup match would likely have been his chance to stake a fresh claim, especially considering Ferran featured against Osasuna.

Now, however, the picture has changed. The absence of the Polish forward complicates Flick’s planning and forces further adjustments in attack. 

While the immediate focus is on playing the cup tie safely, the broader concern is ensuring Lewandowski is available and sharp for the crucial La Liga fixture that follows.

Meanwhile, beyond the striker position, Flick is also expected to use the Copa del Rey as an opportunity to distribute minutes among players who have seen limited involvement in league action.
