Rulani Mokwena's MC Alger progressed to the Algerian Cup Round of 16 after a 2-1 victory over USM Khenchela at the weekend.

MCA broke the deadlock six minutes from the first whistle, thanks to Amine Messoussa. The visitors leveled matters five minutes later to make it 1-1 at half-time.

Mokwena's men restored the lead through Soufiane Bayazid, who has now scored in back-to-back games to make it five goals in 14 matches across all competitions.

Meanwhile, the South African mentor has been tasked with defending the Algerian Ligue 1 title, win domestic cup titles and guide the team to the latter stages of the CAF Champions League.

MCA currently sit atop the log standings with a four-point gap over second-placed MC Oran, who have played three games more.

Mokwena's men remain the only team yet to taste defeat after nine league outings, and have scored 12 goals, while conceding just four.

The Algerian champions have, however, had a slow start in the Champions League as they sit third with one point after losing their group stage opener, before drawing the second match.
