Buffalo Bills RB Ray Davis has found his lane on special teams

The Buffalo Bills have a wealth of talent at running back, with Ray Davis adding a special element to his game in 2025.

Buffalo Bills running back Ray Davis may have found his calling, and it’s coming on kick returns.

The second-year running back currently leads the NFL with an average of 32.4 yards per kick return, a mark that stands as the highest single-season kick return average in Bills history. Since Week 8 of the 2025 season, when Davis took over kick return duties, he’s amassed 745 yards on 23 return attempts, including six returns of over 40-plus yards, and one 97-yard touchdown.

Against the New England Patriots in Week 15, Davis not only gave quarterback Josh Allen and Buffalo’s offense great field position, but he also ignited a change in momentum after opening up the second half with a 58-yard kickoff return.

With running back James Cook III earning his extension and cementing himself as a central piece in the Bills’ offense, Davis’ offensive touches have dwindled. But rather than fading away into the background, Davis has reinvented his impact ability with the team. His work on special teams has become impossible to ignore, and the NFL is starting to take notice.

Even more impressive is that Davis has embraced the role fully, showcasing his versatility beyond just being a running back. His work since Week 8 has put him on a short list of elite kick returners, while quietly becoming one of the league’s best return men.
