Yes, this game was on Sunday. And yes, we didn’t finish any sort of preview to be published before tipoff, but the Gopher men’s basketball team decimated the Texas Southern Tigers 89-53. Cade Tyson scored a career-high 38 points, shooting 8/12 from three and grabbing six rebounds. It was a lights-out shooting performance for the Gophers and this game was never in question.
THE STAT: It would be way too easy to just point out that Minnesota shot 15/34 from three (44%). That’s a nice percentage that will often lead to a victory. But what was truly impressive is that the Gophers had 27 assists on 28 made field goals. There was an assist on 96.4% of their baskets. Minnesota leads the nation in assists per field goals made. This is clearly a function of the type of offense Niko Medved runs, his Colorado State teams also ranked very high in this category.
TURNING POINT: One could argue that this game was over as soon as the ball was tipped off. But the game was 15-11 through the first 10 minutes before Minnesota went on a 16-2 run to open things up to 31-13 and they never looked back.
HOT: Tyson, as mentioned, was 8/12 from three, pacing the team that shot 44% from three for the game.
NOT: The Tigers were just 3/18 from three; the only time they shot worse from behind the arc was their season-opening loss to Gonzaga.
NOTABLE: Minnesota continues to play short-handed as they are still without center, Robert Viahola and forward BJ Omot. Medved is playing a 7-man rotation with Grason Grove and Kai Shinholster coming off the bench.
UP NEXT: Another Sunday game, this time against the Campbell Camels at 5:00 on BTN.
