Florida sophomore wide receiver Tank Hawkins plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. On3 broke the news on Wednesday.
Across two seasons in Gainesville, Hawkins hauled in 12 catches for 116 yards and one touchdown. After playing in five games as a freshman, the Fredericksburg, VA native played in just four games this season. Speculation ran rampant about Hawkins’ status on the team, until it was revealed during the SEC Network broadcast of Florida‘s game against Kentucky on Nov. 8 that he had decided to redshirt this season.
Hawkins’ varied availability was a big factor in Florida‘s struggles, as its wide receiver room was nearly completely depleted by the end of the season. Along with Hawkins, fellow receivers Eugene Wilson III, Dallas Wilson, and Vernell Brown III were mostly unavailable over the final few weeks.
Prior to enrolling at Florida, Tank Hawkins was ranked as a four-star prospect and the No. 300 overall player in the 2024 class, according to the On3 Consensus. He was the No. 49 receiver in his class and the No. 34 overall player from the state of Florida, hailing from IMG Academy.
Jon Sumrall hopes to usher in new era at Florida
Following the mid-season firing of Billy Napier, Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall was the hire to lead the Florida program into the next era.
“I think we’ve got a lot of great players, and I think we’ve really got high character in that class,” Sumrall said at his introductory press conference. “I think the staff has done a good job. I’m going to fight like heck to hold on to them. I FaceTimed with as many of them as I could last night until I fell asleep [on Sunday]. I’m going to FaceTime with the rest of them [Monday] and get them all knocked out and make sure they know, man, I can’t wait to coach them. I’d love to coach them.”
Tank Hawkins is now the ninth Florida player who is expected to enter the Transfer Portal, alongside safety Jordan Castell, safety Josiah Davis, running back KD Daniels, safety Teddy Foster, tight end Amir Jackson, quarterback DJ Lagway, wide receiver Aidan Mizell, and wide receiver Muizz Tounkara.
