FAMU’s Board of Trustees will have a ‘special meeting’ on Dec. 23 to cover an array of topics. One item is ‘Intercollegiate Athletic Contracts.’
The Quinn Gray Sr.-Florida A&M football head coaching rumors could become official soon.
On Tuesday, Dec. 23, FAMU’s Board of Trustees will hold a ‘special meeting’ to discuss an array of institutional topics.
One item included in the 9 a.m. meeting’s agenda is ‘Intercollegiate Athletic Contracts,’ which will be proctored by FAMU President Marva Johnson and Interim Athletic Director Michael Smith.
“I hope to have a coach’s contract to present for approval on Tuesday,” FAMU’s President Johnson told the Tallahassee Democrat Wednesday, Dec. 17.
The special meeting is open to the public for viewing via Zoom.
Although Gray isn’t mentioned by name on the trustees’ agenda, it comes amid community chatter and FAMU insiders' insistence that he is likely to become the Rattlers’ 20th full-time head football coach.
If Gray’s deal is finalized, he would replace former FAMU head coach James Colzie III, who was fired on Dec. 8 after two seasons. Colzie went 12-12, including a 5-7 record this year that was the program’s first losing season since 2017.
Gray, 46, announced he was leaving Albany State after three seasons on Dec. 16. The NCAA Division II Historically Black College and University then released a statement saying Gray was departing for a “new opportunity.”
Albany State, 87 miles north of Tallahassee, went 24-11 overall and 20-4 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games during Gray’s tenure.
This season saw the Golden Rams capture the program’s most single-season wins, going 12-2.
The historic year ended in the Division II playoffs’ quarterfinals in a narrow 31-24 loss versus Newberry College on Dec. 6.
Albany State was named the 2025 Division II Black College Football National Champions.
Gray’s arrival at FAMU would serve as a special homecoming for the Rattlers’ record-setting quarterback, who spent college on the Highest of Seven Hills from 1997 to 2001.
The FAMU Sports Hall of Famer and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Hall of Famer ran head coach Billy Joe’s famed Gulf Coast Offense and was a member of three Rattlers teams that won league titles in 1998, 2000, and 2001.
Gray also had a three-year stint as FAMU’s associate head coach and offensive coordinator from 2011 to 2014.
Additionally, he was the head coach at Lincoln High.
