Virginia Tech football: Hokies’ first portal entry revealed

Expect a ton of movement from the Hokies when the transfer portal opens next month.

The NCAA transfer portal doesn’t open until the new year — January 2 to be exact. But that doesn’t mean players can’t reveal their intentions to enter the portal. The first name for the Virginia Tech Hokies in the James Franklin era has been revealed: quarterback Garret Rangel.

The 6-foot-2, 198-pound Rangel spent one season in Blacksburg, transferring to the Hokies earlier this year after spending three seasons at Oklahoma State. Rangel did not play one snap for Tech last season.

Rangel, a 3-star prospect out of high school, is from Frisco, Texas, where he played at Lone Star High School. He passed for over 9,000 yards and 101 touchdowns during his high school career. Rangel redshirted in 2022, but still appeared in four games, making three starts. Over the course of his three years in Stillwater, Rangel appeared in 13 games, completing 93 of 180 passes (51.7%) for 1,075 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions.

With starting quarterback Kyron Drones out of eligibility and Rangel transferring, the Hokies have three quarterbacks on the roster: Pop Watson (two years remaining) and true freshmen A.J. Brand and Kelden Ryan. Franklin is expected to be aggressive in the transfer portal, specifically at quarterback. It wouldn’t be a surprise if any of the three remaining quarterbacks enter the portal with Franklin looking to reset the position.

The Hokies are expected to have significant roster turnover with the portal and incoming recruiting class.
