The Texas high school football state championships are ongoing at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, but teams around the state are looking to make big moves in order to put themselves in position to compete for a title in 2026.
Count the Houston Christian Mustangs as one of those Texas high school programs eyeing to make a big splash for next season as the athletic program announced on Thursday the appointment of former NFL wide receiver Cecil Shorts III as the school’s next head football coach.
Houston Christian High School names former NFL wide receiver Cecil Shorts III as its next Head Football Coach. Coach Shorts brings elite football experience, educational leadership, and a Christ-centered vision for developing young men on and off the field.
Shorts played in the NFL over the span of six seasons from 2011-16 and played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Houston Texans, respectively.
In his professional career, Shorts compiled 229 receptions for 2,979 yards and scored 14 touchdowns. His best season was in 2012 with the Jaguars when Shorts III caught 55 passes for 979 yards and seven touchdowns.
Shorts, who was most recently the Dean of Students and an assistant football coach at The Second Baptist School, takes over a Houston Christian team that went 4-6 a season ago.
