German Olympians will no longer have to pay tax on medal bonuses, starting with next year's Winter Games in Italy.

The German parliament's upper house, the Bundesrat, on Friday passed an according tax law from the lower house Bundestag.

In the past, some athletes had to pay more than 50% tax on the bonuses.

"The tax exemption for Sporthilfe medal bonuses is a strong sign of political appreciation for the achievements of athletes,’ said former swimming great Franziska van Almsick, deputy chair of the Sports Aid Foundation supervisory board.

It is the second good news for athletes as they will also receive partially higher bonuses from the foundation for medals at the February 6-22, 2026, Milan/Cortina Games and the Paralympics there in March.

A gold will be worth €30,000 ($35,200), up from €20,000 which will now be paid for a silver medal, a rise of €5,000. Bronze medal bonuses stay the same with €10,000.

Athletes placed fourth to eighth will no longer get a bonus but other financial aid from the foundation.
