Quinn Gray FAMU contract: See the deal on the table for football coach

A five-year contract for Quinn Gray to become FAMU’s next head football coach will be up for the board of trustees’ approval on Tuesday, Dec. 23.

Florida A&M has zeroed in on Quinn Gray Sr. becoming its next head football coach.

The school has uploaded to its website a draft of Gray’s contract to lead the Rattlers football program.

It’s a five-year contract worth $1.4 million with a starting salary of $240,000 and a signing bonus of $25,000. Gray will receive a $20,000 annual raise.

Incentives include football student-athlete classroom success, beating Bethune-Cookman in the Florida Classic, and playoff success, such as winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference title and Celebration Bowl.

The contract will be presented to the FAMU Board of Trustees for approval in a special meeting on Tuesday, December 23, at 9 a.m. It’s open for public viewing via Zoom.

A FAMU record-setting and Hall of Fame quarterback, Gray would return to the Rattlers as a head coach after a three-year stint coaching NCAA Division II’s Albany State.

He’d replace former FAMU football coach James Colzie III, who was relieved of his duties on Dec. 8 after going 12-12 in two seasons, including a 5-7 mark in 2025, the Rattlers’ first losing season since 2017.

This Monday, Dec. 15, Gray announced that he was leaving the Historically Black College located in Albany, Georgia, 87 miles north of Tallahassee.

Albany State Golden Rams head coach Quinn Gray Sr. watches from the sidelines as his team plays in an NCAA Division II football game at the Albany State Coliseum in Albany, Georgia.

Gray went 24-11 overall and turned a 20-4 record in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games while with the Albany State Golden Rams.

This year, Albany State went 12-2, its most wins in a single season, won the SIAC Championship, and reached the quarterfinals of the Division II playoffs. The Golden Rams were named the 2025 Division II Black College Football National Champions.

Gray played for the Rattlers under head coach Billy Joe from 1997 to 2001, before embarking on a six-year career in the National Football League, primarily as a reserve quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Gray has coached high school football in Jacksonville, at Alcorn State University, and at the University of Memphis. He was also FAMU’s associate head coach from 2011 to 2014 and head football coach for Lincoln High School in Tallahassee from the 2017 to 2019 seasons
