After four seasons, the Charlotte Fightin’ Tarpons (Fla.) has decided to part ways with head football coach Cory Mentzer.

The odd thing about the split, reported by the Your Sun’s Patrick Obley, is that the school decided to move in a different direction with their football program and told Mentzer, who is an alum of the school, to ‘quietly resign.’

The report doesn’t provide more context to why the school had asked Mentzer to silently go away, but the Fightin’ Tarpons are coming off a 2025 high school football season where the team went 6-5 and fell in the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs to 2024 state semifinalist Manatee, 28-21.

Mentzer took to social media to post a cryptic message not too long after the news broke about him no longer being the head coach at Charlotte.

EVEN JESUS SAT AT A TABLE WITH THE ONE WHO WOULD EVENTUALLY SELL HIM OUT. IT’S A HEAVY WEIGHT TO REALIZE THAT THE PEOPLE YOU BROKE BREAD WITH, STRATEGIZED WITH, AND CONSIDERED FRIENDS WERE THE ONES PLANNING YOUR EXIT. BUT JUST AS THE BETRAYAL OF JUDAS COULDN’T STOP THE RESURRECTION THIS SETBACK WON’T STOP WHAT GOD HAS PLANNED FOR ME NEXT!

Charlotte went 6-5 last season under Mentzer, who on the staff of former longtime head coach Binky Waldrop, the second best record the program had under the former lead man’s watch. What might also have forced the school’s hand was the Fightin’ Tarpons record against rival Port Charlotte, which reached the Class 4A state semifinals this season.

Mentzer and Charlotte went 0-4 the last four seasons against the Pirates, with the program’s time beating Port Charlotte in the area’s “Battle of the Peace River” rivalry back in 2021. Charlotte before 2021 was 36-5 all-time versus Port Charlotte before losing four in a row.

Mentzer finishes his four-year tenure with an overall record of 19-23, leading Charlotte to three playoff appearances.
