Rutgers Hires Jim Turner as Offensive Line Coach

Jim Turner named Rutgers OL coach

Rutgers football has named Jim Turner as its new offensive line coach after it was announced that former OL coach Pat Flaherty would not be coming back next season. Turner has been a coach for over 30 years, including four seasons as an offensive line coach in the NFL.

His college experience coaching offensive line includes two stints at Texas A&M (2008-2011, 2016-2018), Boston College (2007), Delaware (2005-2006), and Texas State (2021). During his time with the Aggies, his offensive line opened the holes for Trayveon Williams, who led the SEC in rushing yards with 1,760, rushing touchdowns, and total touchdowns in 2018. In 2011, the Aggies’ offensive line surrendered just nine sacks on 537 drop-backs. In 2016-2017, Texas A&M’s offenses gained more than 2000 rushing yards and over 3,000 passing yards.

During his time as the Delaware offensive line coach in 2006, current Rutgers offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarocca was the offensive coordinator for the Fightin’ Blue Hens.

He also spent time as an offensive line coach for the NFL’s Miami Dolphins (2012-2013) and Cincinnati Bengals (2016, 2019-2020). His unit with the Bengal paved the way for the team to average over 130+ rushing yards per game and increased their yards per carry by a full yard.

As a college offensive line coach, Turner would have five of his former offensive linemen drafted in the first round of the NFL draft. Those players include Gosder Cherilus, Anthony Castonzo, Luke Joeckel, Jake Matthews, and Cedric Ogbuehi. Five more of his prospects in college would be drafted in the later rounds.

His most recent experience coaching offensive line is with the UFL’s New Orleans Breakers (2022) and Memphis Showboats(2023-2025). His most recent experience coaching was being an interim head coach with the Showboats in 2025.

Turner is a Boston native who spent his collegiate career as a fullback for Boston College.
