When Real Madrid needed calm, authority, and leadership, Thibaut Courtois delivered once more.

The Belgian goalkeeper was one of the key reasons Madrid kept a clean sheet against Sevilla, producing a strong and composed performance that helped his side close out another tense night at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Speaking to Real Madrid TV after the match, Courtois was honest rather than celebratory. He made it clear that while the result mattered, the performance left room for improvement.

“The important thing was to win at home. But we have to improve our football. We won from a set piece and a penalty.

“We have to improve, but at times like this, it’s important to win. We did it against Alaves, in the Copa and today. In 2026, we have to improve.

“The week’s break will perhaps do us all good to rest and improve. Obviously, it’s not easy.

“We’re struggling, and there are a lot of injuries. But in the end, the important thing is the victory.”

Analysing the game

Courtois’ influence was felt most clearly when the scoreline was still tight. At 1-0, Sevilla pushed forward and tested Madrid’s defence, but the Belgian stood firm.

Asked about his own form and confidence, Courtois pointed to the work done behind the scenes and his responsibility to the team.

He explained, “I feel very good. I’ve been working hard every week with Llopis and the goalkeepers.

“I try to help the team. At 1-0, I had to make several saves. It’s my job, and I always try to do my best.”

The conversation also turned to Kylian Mbappe, who reached 59 goals for the calendar year

Courtois did not hesitate to praise the forward’s hunger and quality, while also offering insight into what it is like to face him in training.

Speaking about Mbappe’s impact, he said, “He deserves a lot of credit. He could have scored a few more today, but it wasn’t to be.

“He’s a very hungry lad and he’s leading the attack alongside Vini Jr., Rodrygo and the others.

“Scoring 59 goals is no easy feat. He’s a very talented player with a lot of quality. It’s difficult to stop him in training, but I try, and sometimes we get into a bit of a rivalry.

“Training with the best in the world always makes you a better goalkeeper.”

Captaining Real Madrid

There was also a personal milestone for Courtois on the night, as he wore the captain’s armband at the Bernabeu for the first time.

It was a moment that clearly meant a lot to him. Sharing his emotions, the goalkeeper said, “It was the first time I wore the armband at the Bernabeu.

“It’s always nice, it’s a great honour to be one of the captains of Real Madrid, especially at the Bernabeu.

“It’s a childhood dream to play here, and being one of the captains is a great source of pride. You have to dream big because it can take you a long way,” he concluded.
