The good guys lead, but it should be more
We have made it through the first fifteen minutes at MetLife Stadium, and your Minnesota Vikings lead the New York Giants by a score of 3-0.
The Vikings won the coin toss and elected to take the football first. The Giants’ kicker put the opening kickoff out of bounds, giving Minnesota the football at their own 40-yard line, and they got a third-down conversion early as J.J. McCarthy found Justin Jefferson, who took it across midfield to move the chains. McCarthy then found Josh Oliver for a nice gain down near the Giants’ 30. On 3rd-and-4 from the Giants’ 25, McCarthy lofted what should have been a touchdown pass to Jordan Addison, but Addison just flat out dropped it. The Vikings then called on Will Reichard, who did what he’s done all season by connecting on a 43-yard field goal to give the Vikings an early 3-0 lead.
The Giants took over and moved the ball into Vikings territory. The Minnesota defense got a pair of third down stops, but both were negated by penalties. . .one was an offsetting penalty situation, and one was a play where Harrison Smith was called for roughing the passer when he sacked Jaxson Dart. Then, the Giants faced a 4th-and-5 from the Minnesota 10-yard line and elected to keep the offense on the field. Dart was then sacked by Jalen Redmond, and the Vikings got the ball back after a turnover on downs.
After the Vikings picked up a couple of first downs on the ensuing possession, McCarthy threw a pass intended for Jalen Nailor that Nailor deflected into the hands of Paulson Adebo for an interception that set the Giants up at the Minnesota 44-yard line. As we move to the second quarter, the Giants are looking at a 1st-and-10 from the Minnesota 33.
