Manchester City winger Savinho has spoken of the impact that Jeremy Doku’s absence will have on the squad, amid a firm insistence on stepping up to demands of himself.
The Belgian winger has been one of City’s most dynamic attacking threats this season, providing directness, pace, and unpredictability in wide areas. His enforced spell on the sidelines comes at a testing point, with Pep Guardiola’s side navigating a demanding run of domestic and European fixtures.
Savinho’s comments also arrive during a period of personal stability for the Brazilian, who committed his long-term future to City during the summer. After months of speculation surrounding his future, the winger has since been fully integrated into Guardiola’s plans, benefitting from regular minutes and growing trust from the staff.
Within City’s attacking structure, the absence of Jeremy Doku places increased responsibility on players such as Savinho to provide penetration and creativity from wide areas. Guardiola has previously highlighted the importance of flexibility in his front line, something the Brazilian is increasingly being asked to demonstrate.
Speaking during a new interview with The Sun’s Martin Blackburn, Savinho opened up on his gratitude for the club’s key decision makers in handing him a new long-term contract during the recent summer months.
“Signing a long-term deal shows the trust the club has in me and I’m so grateful for that,” said the Brazilian. “I want to repay that by working hard every day and trying to improve in all areas of my game.
“My focus is to stay consistent and do whatever I can to help the team win trophies over the coming years.”
One name who will aid Savinho in upping his goal contribution figures is Erling Haaland, as the forward explained, “As a winger, you know if you put the ball in the right areas, he’s always going to be there.
“His movement in the box and finishing are amazing and he’s so important to the team. Hopefully I can continue to create chances and support him.”
However, Manchester City’s attacking unit will be somewhat reduced in quality over the coming matches as they handle the absence of Jeremy Doku owing to injury.
“Jeremy has been incredible this season and we will miss him in the team for a short period,” said Savinho. “We’re looking forward to having him back quickly because he is on top form.
“I just need to keep working hard to help the team at a time where we have important games ahead of us.”
Looking ahead, Jeremy Doku’s eventual return will be welcomed, but Savinho’s comments underline his readiness to shoulder greater responsibility in the interim. With Pep Guardiola demanding consistency and end product from wide players, this period could prove pivotal in the Brazilian’s development.
Should Savinho continue to combine creativity with improved output, Manchester City may emerge from Jeremy Doku’s absence with another winger fully established as a decisive figure – further strengthening Guardiola’s attacking options for the decisive stages of the season.
