Championship side Bristol City have agreed a deal to sign free agent Sam Morsy on an initial six-month contract.

The 34-year-old midfielder had joined Kuwait FC on a two-year agreement in the summer, but the contract was cancelled in September after playing just three games.

Prior to that, the Egypt international had captained Ipswich Town to consecutive promotions from League One, through the Championship and into the Premier League.

Kieran McKenna's side finished 19th in the table and suffered immediate relegation back into the second tier.

Bristol City are ninth in the Championship, two points adrift of a play-off spot but have experienced a number of injury issues, particularly in central midfield.

Joe Williams has not played since last season's play-off semi-final first leg against Sheffield United because of an ankle injury and is not expected back until January.

Max Bird has suffered a fresh setback concerning his calf problem while captain Jason Knight has only recently returned from a groin injury.

Head coach Gerhard Struber has also been forced to play centre-back Zak Vyner in midfield on occasions.

The club have an option of extending Morsy's deal by 12 months at the end of the season.
