Cedarburg junior Grayson Rudich voted high school athlete of the week

With just over 50% of last week's vote, Cedarburg junior swimmer Grayson Rudich won the high school athlete of the week poll.

Grayson Rudich of Cedarburg boys swimming was the winner of last week’s Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Piggly Wiggly high school athlete of the week poll from Dec. 15 to Dec. 20.

Rudich took first place in the 200-yard individual medley and 200 butterfly in a dual meet against Whitefish Bay on Dec. 9. He was also the anchor leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay in the meet. Four days later, Rudich took first place in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle events at the Port Washington Invite, along with helping the Bulldog relay teams pick up victories in the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle events. The team finished second overall in the team standings.  

Rudich received 2,702 of 5,393 total votes cast.

Mackenzie Gruszynski of Hartford gymnastics was the runner-up of last week’s poll. The senior led the Orioles to a first-place finish at the West Bend Invite on Dec. 6, finishing atop the leaderboard in four events, leading to an individual all-around victory. Gruszynski scored a 36.65 in the all-around, a 9.475 on the vault, 9.025 on bars, 9.1 on the beam and a 9.05 on the floor. Her score of 9.475 in the vault tied the school record. The Orioles also captured the Manitowoc Invite title Dec. 13 with Gruszynski winning the all-around title again with a score of 36.175.

Other nominees included Gabi Ortiz Fleet of Shorewood/USM gymnastics, Henry Gruetzmacher of Brookfield Central boys basketball and Lexi Hummer of Waukesha West/South gymnastics.
