The high school football season around the country has wrapped up and with that comes honors for coaches and players from the 2025 season. One state out of the New England region that is starting to produce some impressive talent and teams from around the country is Massachusetts high school football.

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) state finals ended a couple weeks ago and we decided to get right to it when it comes to end of the year honors.

We continue into the Old Colony State of Massachusetts as Rivals looked through the season and selected award nominees from this past season. Who were the best players for the 2025 Massachusetts high school football season, though?

Rivals give you the Massachusetts high school football honorees for the 2025 season.

Player of the Year: Peter Bourque, QB, Tabor Academy

The University of Michigan commitment dazzled behind center every time he touched the field for Tabor Academy and the scary part for opposing teams is Peter Bourque returns in 2027. Bourque last season accounted for 2,929 all-purpose yards with 33 total touchdowns and as he led the Seawolves to a dominating, 42-21 win over Buckingham Browne & Nichols School for the John Papas Bowl title in the NEPSAC. Statistically, Bourque ended up throwing for 2,241 yards and 18 touchdowns and then on the ground totaled 688 and 15 scores. Though only a handful of other passers in Massachusetts can match Bourque’s numbers, there’s zero denying the performances came against the state’s toughest competition week in and week out.

Offensive Player of the Year: Christian McIntyre, ATH, Xaverian Brothers

How Xaverian Brothers’ Christian McIntyre has gone under the radar for so long couldn’t be ignored any longer with how the do-everything athlete played this past 2025 season for the Hawks. The senior two-way dynamo was a nightmare for opposing defensive backs as Xaverian Brothers pulled off the 3-peat as Division 1 Super Bowl state champions. The senior wide receiver finished the season catching 65 passes for 1,562 yards and scoring 26 touchdowns for Xaverian Brothers. Flipping over to the defensive side of the ball, McIntyre jumped into the secondary and became a ball hawk as he intercepted four passes. Colleges are started to take notice as Holy Cross and UMass both have offered one of Massachusetts top high school football players.

Defensive Player of the Year: Dominic Funke, EDGE, Xaverian Brothers

There wasn’t many offensive tackles in the state of Massachusetts that could slow down the play of Boston College EDGE signee Dominic Funke throughout 2025. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound edge rusher was terrific this past year for Xaverian Brothers as the future Eagle anchored one side of the field for the Hawks en route to the state championship. The numbers told the story for the state’s top defensive player as Funke totaled 68 tackles, 33.5 went for a loss, 14.5 sacks and six passes defensed. For a team that was loaded on the offensive side of the ball, Funke was certainly a force to be reckon with on the defensive end on Xaverian Brothers.

Coach of the Year: Derek Almeida, Fairhaven

Last season for Fairhaven ended in heartbreak as the Blue Devils fell short of winning the MIAA Division 6 Super Bowl state championship, falling to Hudson, 21-14. The standard ever since alum Derek Almeida took over the Fairhaven football program has been to win and state championships have been the bar on an annual basis. This 2025 season, Almeida took his alma mater back to the mountain top for the second time in the last three years as Fairhaven defeated Norwell, 28-14. Almeida led the Blue Devils to a 12-1 record for the second time in three years as well. The Blue Devils have a 55-13 record since 2020 when Almeida took over the program and have shown no signs of letting up under his watch.
