New interview just dropped!
Earlier today, Kevin Henry of the Denver Gazette published this interview with Colorado Rockies president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta.
The entire article is worth your time, but here are a few comments that struck me as noteworthy.
First, DePodesta noted that they have built a staff with a diverse knowledge base.
Second, he said that with the front office and coaching staff were mostly set, they are turning their attention to building a roster, including talking to free agents.
Here are two quotes that stood out.
They’ve begun evaluating the Rockies’ roster, and he expects the process to last throughout the season:
We definitely want to get to know all of our own players a lot better. We all know them to some degree, but we know them all from the outside looking in. Members of our front office have scouted these players or our coaches have faced these players before. So we all have an idea of maybe what they are, but I think we’re all anxious to get to know them better from the inside and get to know their strengths, get to know them as people, and then really try to figure out how we can help them become the best player they can possibly be.
Players have reached out to the Rockies:
There are people who have proactively reached out to us saying, ‘We want to play there.’ They see certain opportunities, not just because of playing time, although that’s certainly part of it. But fortunately, just within the last couple of weeks with what we’ve been able to put together off the field, I think people are excited and there are some players who want to be a part of that.
There are some players who want to be tutored by some of our pitching guys. There are hitters who I think would be excited to come over and be part of what we’re going to try to build here. It’s been good and I think it’s been really positive so far.
