WVU led from the jump and pulled away before halftime, closing nonconference play with an 86–51 win over the Delta Devils in Morgantown. Treysen Eaglestaff scored 23 to lead five Mountaineers in double figures.
West Virginia closed nonconference play Monday night with an 86–51 win over Mississippi Valley State at Hope Coliseum, pulling away in the first half and never giving the Delta Devils a chance to make it competitive.
The Mountaineers scored the game’s first seven points and were in control from the start, though the first half took a few minutes to open up as the Delta Devils sat in a zone. A brief stretch midway through the half opened the game up for the Mountaineers, helped along by DJ Thomas and Amir Jenkins off the bench. WVU carried a 42–22 lead into the break.
The second half belonged to Treysen Eaglestaff. After scoring three points in the first half, he came out aggressive and finished with a season-high-tying 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including four three-pointers. He also pulled down eight rebounds and handed out two assists. Honor Huff added 13 points, all four field goals coming from behind the arc, and Harlan Obioha finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
Thomas scored 11 points and Jenkins added 10, giving WVU five players in double figures. The Mountaineers shot 53.1% from the floor and went 12-of-27 from three, while limiting Mississippi Valley State to 34.6% from the field. WVU forced nine turnovers and held another opponent under 60 points for the eighth time this season.
Chance Moore did not play after being held out for precautionary reasons.
After the game, Ross Hodge credited the crowd for showing up on a Monday night so close to Christmas, with an announced attendance of 10,234, and said the team benefited from having time to work between games.
The Mountaineers will take a few days off for Christmas before returning to campus on Dec. 27. Their Big 12 opener comes Friday, Jan. 2, at third-ranked Iowa State.
