How former LSU football linebacker fared with the Auburn in 2025

LSU freshman linebacker Xavier Atkins transferred to Auburn after the 2024 season. See how the former Tiger performed with his new team this season.

Following the 2024 season, former LSU football freshman linebacker Xavier Atkins decided that the best choice for his career was a fresh start, entering the transfer portal after only one year in Baton Rouge. During his time at LSU, Atkins appeared in seven contests, totaling three tackles.

Though there hasn’t been any concrete clarification on why Atkins decided to transfer, it’s likely had to do with a lack of playing time in Baton Rouge.

Atkins decided to stay in the SEC in 2025, landing at Auburn. This may seem like a poor choice given the team’s 5-7 record, but it was the best call Atkins could have made.

Auburn Tigers linebacker Xavier Atkins (17) sacks Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson (15) as Auburn Tigers take on Alabama Crimson Tide in the Iron Bowl at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala. on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2025. Alabama Crimson Tide leads Auburn Tigers 17-6.

Atkins got the playing time he wanted at Auburn, and he made good on the opportunity. He recorded the second-most pressures among SEC linebackers (25), the second-most tackles (68), the most run stops (51), and tied for third in forced fumbles (2). The most impressive part was arguably his 10 sacks, which were the second-most in the nation in 2025.

Atkins’ 91.7 grade from PFSN was the top mark among FBS linebackers this season, even surpassing Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, who was a Heisman candidate for much of the year.

Atkins earned AFCA Coaches All-American honors for his 2025 performance.

The future looks bright for LSU’s linebacker room, but seeing Atkins put together such an impressive season for another team stings.
