Report: Chris Armas to take over as head coach for KC Current

The former Colorado Rapids head coach will reportedly take over the vacant position in Kansas City

ESPN’s Jeff Kassouf and Jeff Carlisle report that former Colorado Rapids head coach and 2025 National Soccer Hall of Fame inductee, Chris Armas, is set to take over as head coach of the reigning NWSL Shield winners, Kansas City Current.

The club has not yet confirmed the hiring, but the report said it is pending league clearance and confirmation is expected imminently.

Armas most recently spent two seasons as the Colorado Rapids head coach. In his first season the team was seventh in the Western Conference table and suffered a first-round playoff exit against the eventual champions, LA Galaxy. In 2025 the team missed the playoffs all-together with an 11th place finish.

On decision day in a post-match press conference Armas went viral in U.S. Soccer circles when he criticized a local reporter for his question’s about Armas’ future considering team’s elimination from playoff contention on decision day.

The Colorado Rapids announced the two sides had mutually agreed to part ways at the end of the 2025 season as Armas’ contract expired. Armas has not coached a women’s professional team, but coached the Adelphi Women’s University team, his alma mater, from 2011-2014 to a 47-23-10 record.

Vlatko Andonovski transitioned away from the role of head coach to full-time sporting director ahead of the Current’s early exit from the NWSL playoffs in a loss to the eventual NWSL Champions, Gotham FC.

Armas was an accomplished player during his playing days as a defensive midfielder and made multiple MLS All-Star teams and 66 appearances with the United States Men’s National Team.
