The New York Yankees have a few options to replace Cody Bellinger if he doesn't re-sign.
As the days continue without Cody Bellinger returning to the Bronx, the New York Yankees must be prepared for the reality that the slugger won’t be in the picture during the 2026 season.
If Bellinger does sign elsewhere this winter, here are three outfielders the Yankees could pursue as backup options.
Harrison Bader
At one point, Harrison Bader wore the pinstripes and played a key role in the team reaching the ALCS during the 2022 season.
Now, Bader is coming off arguably the best offensive season of his career, registering a .277/.347/.449 slashline with an OPS of .796.
Bellinger was not only a key piece in New York’s lineup, but was also a great defender in the outfield. If he doesn’t return, the Yankees will need to figure out a way to supplement that run prevention, and Bader is a great option to do so.
Last year, Bader ranked in the 92nd percentile in outs above average and the 84th percentile in arm strength.
Bader may not have the star status Bellinger does, but he could certainly help replicate some of his impact if Bellinger leaves.
Austin Hays
Austin Hays is coming up with a resurgent season as a member of the Cincinnati Reds, where he logged a .768 OPS with 15 home runs.
Even though Hays won in the National League last year, he’s more than familiar with Yankee Stadium after spending four seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. Hays has even had a decent amount of success playing in the Bronx, recording a .298/.337/.564 in 94 at-bats at the Yankees’ home stadium.
Of course, the Yankees would love to have Bellinger back, but there are worse options than Hays to have in the outfield if he does end up with a different organization next year.
Starling Marte
The New York Mets have stolen a number of the Yankees’ free agents this offseason. If Bellinger signs elsewhere, it could be Brian Cashman’s turn to take away one of David Stearn’s players.
Even at 37 years old, Starline Marte has been a solid hitter, recording a .745 OPS with the Mets in 2025. In a limited role, he could be a solid bench piece.
Marte himself wouldn’t fill the void Bellinger would leave in his absence, but the veteran could be a nice presence to have in the locker room if the Yankees choose to rely more on youngsters Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones.
