Monroe County Region basketball roundup for games of Dec. 21-23

SMCC boys share the basketball and come away with early Christmas gift.

MONROE – With Christmas just a few days away, St. Mary Catholic Central’s boys basketball team was giving mood.

The Falcons shared the basketball and treated itself to an early Christmas gift, beating Detroit Leadership 60-37 on Tuesday, Dec. 23.

Jack Starner (17), Brock Cousino (13) and Ben Martin all scored in double figures as the Falcons for the second time in seven games under new coach Bryce Windham.

The Falcons took charge of the game by dominating the third period 21-5.

Starner scored 8 points, Aaron Fowkes 5 and Cousino and Martin 4 each in the decisive quarter.

Toledo Bowsher 52, Monroe 43

MONROE – Monroe fell into a 15-6 hole in the opening quarter and lost by that same margin.

Carlos Perry led the 1-6 Trojans with 16 points.

Ida 64, Sand Creek 42

IDA – Owen Snyder scored 10 of his game-high 19 points in the third quarter, then hit all four of his free throws in the fourth quarter.

Jacob Towne added 12 points as the Blue Streaks (5-2) got points from 10 different players.

Onsted 63, Erie Mason 61

ERIE – “We dropped a really tough one tonight, but played our best game of the season,” Mason coach Isaac Skaggs said. “Incredibly proud of my team. Onsted is very well coached and had a major size advantage.”

David Sweeney missed much of the first half with foul trouble, but still led the 2-4 Eagles with 18 points.

Logan Doom added 16 points, all in the second half.

Mason-s junior varsity won 39-33 behind 19 points by Brad Weaver.

Summerfield 60, Toledo Waite 45

TOLEDO – Summerfield roared out of the halftime locker room with a 20-3 run that put the game away.

“Once again, we started slow but had a great half playing on the road,” Summerfield coach Phil Schiffler said.

Brody St. John led the way with 19 points and 8 rebounds and Rylee Schiffler rang up 14 points and 5 boards for the 5-2 Bulldogs.

LIVONIA – Airport led 13-10 after the opening quarter, but gave up 21 in the second period and never recovered.

“We played a decent first quarter and it was downhill after that,” Airport coach Ryan Marino said.

Dillon Byrd led 4-2 Jets with 14 points.

GIRLS

SMCC 47, Erie Mason 18

MONROE – St. Mary Catholic Central got points from 10 different players and never gave up more than 7 points in a quarter.

“The girls executed a lot of the things that we’ve been working on,” SMCC coach Brian Boberg said. “Also, everyone contributed, which was great to see.”

Adela Illes led the offense for the 2-2 Kestrels with 15 points and sophomore Heidi Cousino added a career-high 10.

SUNDAY’S GAME

GIRLS

New Boston Huron 66, Summit 56

SOUTHGATE – New Boston Huron won both of it’s games in the Southgate Holiday Tournament.

Senior guard Elle Huffman had a big game for the 4-2 Chiefs with 25 points. She drilled six 3-pointers.

Addison Beddow added 13 points and Ava Russo 11.

“They do not declare a champion, it's just a way to get in a couple extra games,” Huron coach Bradd Bossick said. “We played well.”
