With Brandon Lowe's addition to the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team is starting to look like a possible playoff contender for the 2026 MLB season.
The last time the Pittsburgh Pirates played playoff baseball was over a decade ago in October of 2015. Since then, there hasn’t been much to be excited about at PNC Park as the fall months approach.
With all of the moves the front office has made this offseason, that could all change in 2026, and the one person who is already talking postseason is the All-Star hitter the Pirates just acquired: Brandon Lowe.
During a recent interview with team reporters, Lowe said, “I feel like there's a real opportunity there for for a deep push and for some playoff baseball in Pittsburgh.”
Even though the Pirates only won 71 games and came in last place in the National League Central a year ago, Lowe’s claim really isn’t too far-fetched when you look at where the roster is at right now.

Pittsburgh’s most significant issue over the last few seasons has been their lineup - the pitching staff has routinely done their job, but there truly are some legitimate, proven big-league hitters who will be
Yes, there is definitely much more work and development the Pirates roster must do on the diamond to make those playoff hopes a reality, but Lowe admits there’s more to a well-rounded team than simply what the box score shows each night.
“I think one of the biggest things that truly helps the product on the field is a good clubhouse,” said the veteran slugger. “When the guys are close, they're joking around, having a great time, teasing each other in the clubhouse, but then when you get on the field and you step on that, step in between the lines, it's my guys against you… a clubhouse after a win is a whole heck of a lot more fun than after I loss.”
Yes, Lowe's addition to the lineup will make Pittsburgh’s offense better in 2026, but the leadership he’s also bringing to the table could help the Pirates’ playoff dreams become more of a reality as the season progresses.
