Chelsea were dominant in the first half against Aston Villa, but ended up losing the game 2-1 after conceding twice in the second period.
There were a lot of players who frustrated, especially among the attackers. But Joao Pedro annoyed us the most. Leading the line against a slow Villa defence he didn’t create nearly enough. Reece James’ corner happened to hit the Brazilian’s leg and roll in, but that was about all he did.

Amazingly, the Daily Express actually gave him a 7/10:
“Forced Emi Martinez into a fine save midway through the first-half as he was denied by the Argentina international. Thought he should have had a penalty in the opening period after being challenged by Victor Lindelof, but the referee waved away his protests. Popped up with the opening goal after getting on the end of James’ corner but couldn’t add to his tally.”
The Chelsea Chronicle said:
“The Brazilian didn’t know much about his goal, but it will count all the same. He was hassling Emi Martinez in the Villa goal and got his reward.”
The Evening Standard said he was :
“Pretty anonymous apart from a chance he ought to have scored and then his goal, when James’s corner deflected in off his leg.”
That totally accidental deflection that went in is doing a lot of heavy lifting in all these reviews. JP was not good enough considering his team were dominating at home. This was a game where he needed to boss defenders and score goals.
Instead, all of that hard work from the defence and midfield came to nothing.
In other news…
Reece James’ wicked corner was turned in by Joao Pedro to open the scoring for the Blues in this game, a well deserved goal for the team who had dominated the game throughout.
Enzo Maresca admitted ahead of today’s game that he was frustrated that people were still talking about his comments from a couple of weeks ago relating to a lack of support within the club.
