Oregon is set to lose another player to the transfer portal, as quarterback Austin Novosad plans to explore new opportunities. Novosad becomes the eighth Ducks player to enter the portal this offseason, continuing a period of change for the program as it adjusts its roster.

Novosad saw limited action during the 2025 season. He appeared in just one game, attempting two passes in Oregon’s season-opening win over Montana State. Across three seasons in Eugene, he played in seven total games and completed 12 of his 15 pass attempts for 99 yards. While his game reps were limited, Novosad remained part of a crowded and competitive quarterback room.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback arrived at Oregon with high expectations. A four-star recruit in the 2023 class, Novosad starred at Dripping Springs High School in Texas. He ranked among the top 110 players nationally, was listed as the No. 9 quarterback in his class, and stood out as one of the top prospects in the state of Texas.

Novosad originally committed to Baylor before flipping to Oregon following the hiring of Will Stein, who joined the Ducks’ staff after Kenny Dillingham left for Arizona State. At the time, Novosad was viewed as a long-term option at quarterback for the Ducks.

Entering the 2025 season, many expected Novosad to serve as the primary backup to starting quarterback Dante Moore. Instead, walk-on Brock Thomas and redshirt freshman Luke Moga both earned playing time ahead of him, leaving Novosad as a third-string option for much of the year. That lack of opportunity ultimately made the path to playing time difficult.

As the transfer portal continues to fill, Novosad enters a quarterback market led by bigger names. Former Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby and former Florida quarterback DJ Lagway currently sit at the top of most quarterback rankings. New additions like North Carolina’s Bryce Baker and James Madison’s Alonza Barnett III are also expected to compete for top-10 spots in updated rankings.

Because Novosad was a third-string quarterback at Oregon, his landing spot will likely come after those higher-profile transfers find homes. Programs such as Nebraska, Texas, James Madison, Indiana, Miami, and LSU are all expected to be active in the quarterback market, but many will first target the more proven or experienced options.

With Novosad heading to the portal, Oregon’s quarterback room now includes Thomas, Moga, and Akili Smith Jr. The situation remains fluid, especially with Oregon still working to finalize its offensive coordinator position, where tight ends coach Drew Mehringer is viewed as a leading candidate.

While Novosad may not be the headline name in this portal cycle, his size, recruiting background, and experience at a Power Five program give him a strong chance to earn an opportunity at the right program. His situation highlights just how competitive the quarterback position has become in college football.
