David Warner made 10 from 12 balls and England's Sam Billings 23 from 19, with Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan 25 Thunder's highest score.
Nottinghamshire batter Joe Clarke struck a 37-ball 60 as opener in Stars' chase and they completed victory with six overs to spare.
Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell also hit 39 not out from 20 balls.
The win moves Stars two points clear of second-placed Hobart Hurricanes at the top of the table. Thunder are one of five teams with only two points.
