I hope you’ve had a pleasant holiday season. It’s starting to snow sideways here in Minnesota, and I already did my Midwestern Dad duties for the day: shoveled and salted the church walk after realizing there was nobody to do it before the 10:30am Mass, then went home and chipped some accumulated ice off the sides of the driveway to help ease the shoveling later.
I suppose the more Dad thing would’ve been “don’t let ice accumulate in the first place,” but go easy on me—I’m only 2/5 of the way to a full WSR.
Cast your mind back to the last time we saw a Big Ten basketball team take the court: December 23, the Tuesday before Christmas, when Ohio State and UCLA pounded buy-game opponents Grambling and UC-Riverside, respectively. The only noteworthy thing to happen in the last week of Big Ten hoops was Illinois pounding Missouri in Braggin’ Rights by a record margin, 91-48 (unless you count Penn State losing at home to Pitt by an equally absurd margin, 80-46).
So on we march, most Big Ten teams hardly stirring from their slumber for one final cupcake before resolving, in the new year, to play a few tougher teams—except whoever opens with Rutgers.

Big Ten Games
Old Dominion Monarchs at Maryland Terrapins
5pm | BTN | MD -13.5 | O/U 153.5
Is it a colonial-sounding school on the East Coast? Old Dominion’s lost to them! L’s against George Washington, Bill & Mary, Richmond, and George Mason, as well as Xavier, Drexel, Nova, and Coastal Carolina. The wins are over Randolph (non-DI), Norfolk and Morgan State, and—gasp!—James Madison.
The Monarchs are small and don’t shoot particularly well.
Omaha Mavericks at Oregon Ducks
7pm | BTN | UO -21.5 | O/U 153.5
The Mavs—who just announced a big ol’ athletic complex, not for nothing—have feasted on non-DI competition: they’ve beaten Concordia (NE), Mid-American Christian, Doane, and York (NE), managing wins over Southern Utah, Portland State, and Lamar all by 5 points or less. Nothing special, especially inside—though they do have a 7’1” dude from California, for sure reason—and the Webfoots should roll. Or waddle. Whatever.
