In Tuesday’s ACC Action, UNC topped Florida State 79-66, Pitt fell to Miami 76-69, Louisville popped Cal 90-70 and Notre Dame got by Stanford 47-40.
We were really surprised that FSU hung around as long as they did. We didn’t think an upset was going to happen here, but we also thought UNC would run away and they didn’t really do that.
This was a one-point game about 4:00 into the second half before the Heels got going behind a terrific game from freshman Caleb Wilson, who finished with 22 points, 16 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 blocks.
UNC won the first half by 6 points and the second by 7.
UNC had a significant advantage from the line where they outscored the ‘Noles 14-8. If Florida State had shot a little better – they shot 30% from behind the line and 35% overall – they might have made this more interesting. We’re really curious to know who this team is: is it the team that got blown out five straight times? Or a team that won its last two before UNC by a total of 51 points and that came into Chapel Hill and gave the Heels a better-than-expected game?
Well, they host Duke next so we’ll have a better idea by next Saturday.
Meanwhile, down in Boca Raton, Pitt surprised with a 10 point halftime lead over Miami before the ‘Canes rallied, outscoring the Panthers by 17 after the break.
Malik Reneau and led the way. Reneau had 28 points and 8 boards while Donaldson finished with 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.
Striking stat here: the ‘Canes had a mere 6 assists on 29 made baskets.
Louisville had little trouble with Cal, rushing out to a 10-0 lead and just running away from the Bears. Cal rallied a bit in the second half, but couldn’t get closer than 11.
And they did this with Mikel Brown sitting out again (back). Kobe Rogers (concussion) was back, but not hugely effective (3 points and 5 rebounds in 22 minutes)
Since Brown is their best player, this is really impressive.
West Coast traveling partner Notre Dame had more trouble with Stanford, scoring just 47 points but still prevailing.
It was a game that Tony Bennett might have loved.
Notre Dame hit just 3-16 on their threes. Stanford? Try 4-30.
The Irish shot 32% overall; the Cardinal just 23%.
High-flying freshman Ebuka Okorie who had scored 62 points in his last two games managed just 7 here.
Only two players got to double figures, and we mean for both teams.
For Notre Dame, it’s a bad win but for Stanford, it’s a bad loss. Which would you rather have?
One interesting note: State holds a commitment from promising wing Cole Cloer. He was supposed to arrive next fall but will now be on campus for the spring semester. He won’t play – he’s recovering from a knee injury – but he’ll get a better rehab opportunity than he would at home.
On Wednesday, he’ll watch NC State and Wake Forest in Raleigh. Virginia and Virginia Tech tangle in Blacksburg and Clemson visits Syracuse.
All three are interesting games. Wake has shown they can play with the big dogs. The Virginia teams are rivals obviously but the Cavs are much more fun now under Ryan Odom. And finally, Clemson and Syracuse are to an extent wild cards. We’ll get a much better idea of just where both teams stand now.
