New England Patriots player Christian Barmore facing assault charges

The charges against Barmore come after his teammate was charged with assault.

New England Patriots player Christian Barmore is facing domestic violence charges, accused of assaulting his daughter's mother who is pregnant with his second child, according to a criminal complaint.

The 26-year-old defensive tackle is charged with one misdemeanor count of assault and battery on a family/household member that stems from an incident that allegedly occurred at his Massachusetts apartment in August, according to court documents.

Barmore is scheduled to be arraigned on Feb. 3.

The charges against Barmore surfaced one day after strangulation and assault charges against the Patriots' star wide receiver Stefon Diggs came to light.

"The New England Patriots are aware of reports regarding a pending February arraignment involving Christian Barmore, which stems from an alleged domestic incident that occurred in August. The Patriots were made aware at the time of the incident and informed the NFL in a timely manner," the team said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Patriots added, "The matter remains part of an ongoing legal process. We will respect that process, continue to monitor the situation closely, as we have over the past few months, and cooperate fully with the league. We will have no further comment at this time."

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel was asked about the allegations against Barmore and Diggs during his weekly press conference on Wednesday.

"These, again, are allegations, and we've made a statement," Vrabel said. "We've taken the allegations very seriously, and what comes of that, I think then we'll have a lot of discussion, but I don't think we have to jump to any sort of conclusions right now. Let the process take, take its time."

The 6-foot-5, 315-pound Barmore is accused of assaulting the 31-year-old woman with whom he had been in an on-and-off relationship for more than three years, according to court documents.

According to the charging document, the victim alleged that Barmore assaulted her on Aug. 8 inside his apartment in Mansfield, Massachusetts.

The victim, who shares a child with Barmore and is pregnant with his second child, contacted the Mansfield Police Department on Aug. 25 to report the alleged abuse, saying she was hesitant to come forward sooner because Barmore is a pro athlete, according to the complaint.

She alleged that on the day of the incident, Barmore became angry with her over the setting of his apartment's air conditioning and allegedly asked "why she was eating his food," according to the charging document.

The victim told a Mansfield police sergeant that when she packed some belongings to leave and called her mother, Barmore took her phone from her hand and disconnected the call, according to the charging document. She said she was about to open a door and scream for help when Barmore allegedly "grabbed her before she could and threw her to the floor," according to the court papers.

She alleged that when she tried to get up, Barmore "grabbed her by the shirt in the area of her neck," but then let her go and called his mother, who tried to calm him down, according to the charging document.

The victim did not want to file charges against Barmore when she reported the incident, but then decided on Sept. 9 to pursue charges, according to the court papers.

The criminal complaint against Barmore was issued on Dec. 16.

In a statement to ESPN, Barmore's attorney, David Meier, said, "We are confident that the evidence will demonstrate that no criminal conduct took place. Based on the facts and the law, we expect that this personal matter will be resolved in the near future and both parties will move forward together."

On Tuesday, the charges against Diggs became public. Diggs is facing strangulation and assault charges stemming from an incident on Dec. 2 in which his private chef alleged he attacked her in a dispute over money she claimed the football player owed her.

According to a criminal complaint, Diggs allegedly "smacked her across the face" and "tried to choke her using the crook of his elbow around her neck."

Meier, who also represents Diggs, said in a statement that the wide receiver "categorically denies these allegations ... because they did not occur."

"They are unsubstantiated, uncorroborated, and were never investigated -- because they did not occur," Meier said.

The Patriots are scheduled to play their last regular-season game on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins before entering the American Football Conference playoffs.

Vrabel said during his Wednesday press conference that he hasn't heard anything that would keep either Diggs or Barmore out of Sunday's game.
