Liverpool could sign a bigger talent than Antoine Semenyo for £62m. Now it's down to Richard Hughes to make it happen.
Liverpool enter the January transfer window knowing they must look at wingers. There's no way around that after selling Luis Diaz in the summer but deciding not to replace him.
It would be one thing, of course, if the system had changed and Liverpool were thriving without wingers. Neither of those things are true, however.
Arne Slot hasn't stuck rigidly to the 4-2-3-1 of last season and has made changed in the last month. But he's reverted back to effectively a variant of the system - and he's still very much trying to get wingers in there.
Poor performances, though, have shone a bright light on Liverpool's lack of pace. That's something you do look at wingers to provide, only this squad doesn't really offer that. Neither Cody Gakpo nor Mo Salah are particularly quick at this stage - someone new feels like a necessity.
But it won't be Antoine Semenyo. Liverpool were heavily linked with the Bournemouth star but he appears destined for Manchester City - Sky Sports report that deal should go through very quickly.
Fortunately, though, Liverpool have another option. Potentially a better one.
Yan Diomande is available
Sky Sports also report that Yan Diomande is expected to leave RB Leipzig in 2026. Liverpool have been strongly linked with him, too, and the suppose £62m asking price is one the club can't ignore.
Especially as that's considerably lower than the £87m that's been consistently reported this season. Diomande, who only joined Leipzig in the summer, has shone brightly in the Bundesliga and that's seen him linked with a number of elite clubs.
