We do not yet know whether 2026 will be Pep Guardiola’s final year as Manchester City manager but it has not got off to the best of starts.
In a title race that looks like it will grip us all the way until May, it is City who have wobbled first, their frustration and irritation summed up by Guardiola and Gianluigi Donnarumma picking an argument with Sunderland substitute Luke O’Nien, after the final whistle, following an earlier clash with Josko Gvardiol.
Guardiola denied he was frustrated after the game, insisting he was “delighted” with the way his team had played against a “difficult opponent”. He said it was a “point won rather than two lost” but it felt like a brave face being put on in public.
It was that sort of night, tetchy and uncomfortable for City who, despite not playing since Saturday, looked jaded, short on energy and, unusually for them, ideas.
Asked to respond to Arsenal’s marauding win over Aston Villa two days earlier, City could not find a way to beat a Sunderland team who created the better chances in the first half and hung on doggedly in the second.
Erling Haaland barely got a kick and looked badly out of sorts. When their main striker struggles, so do City and Guardiola will be hoping this was just an off night for his Norwegian talisman.
Haaland rarely looked comfortable against Sunderland’s combative centre-backs, Omar Alderete and Nordi Mukiele, but neither did anyone in a blue shirt as Sunderland dragged them into an arm wrestle.
It was only in the final half-hour that Guardiola’s side got any real control of the game and they still could not crack open Sunderland.
It was another excellent performance from Régis Le Bris’s side, who remain unbeaten at the Stadium of Light in the league and who, against all the odds, look capable of mounting a push for European football in the second half of the campaign. They continue to find ways to impress and have now taken points off every team in the top five.
Given they were tipped for relegation when they were promoted via the play-offs, no manager has done a better job so far this season than the softly-spoken Frenchman.
“It was a good game,” Le Bris said. “Against a really strong opponent, one of the best in Europe. Important to defend properly. We showed we can defend high, when they came a bit higher with their quality we had to manage the ball in the final third. They created many chances but the character was good. Even when we were on the edge we had one foot, one head, something to protect the ball.”
City’s form had been ominous for their rivals, with eight successive wins in all competitions resembling the sort of run they routinely embarked upon when they won four successive league titles. But this was an unexpected set-back.
Sunderland have made things uncomfortable for every team they have faced on home turf and there were enough flashes of danger early on for City to be wary of leaving themselves short on numbers at the back.
City, as expected, had far more of the ball, but Sunderland always carry a threat on the counter. In fact, it was Sunderland who carved out the best chance of the first half, with a long ball forward that caught City’s defence flat footed
Brian Brobbey showed remarkable strength to shrug off Ruben Dias, cleverly holding on to the centre-back’s shirt as they tussled before shoving him off balance. But, left with only the goalkeeper to beat inside the area, his shot hit the giant frame of Donnarumma and he could not get the follow up effort away before City’s defenders recovered their positions.
By that stage, City had put the ball in the net, but Bernardo Silva had just been a fraction too slow to get back on side when he hooked home Erling Haaland’s flick on. City, though, were not really clicking in any area of the pitch.
Sunderland were far more energetic, flying into tackles, rushing City’s passing and putting pressure on them to play through the lines far more quickly than they wanted. You do not normally see City give the ball away as often as they did here, which was all down to the speed with which Sunderland closed them down. They were stronger, more determined and the ball kept coming back at the City defence.
By the time half-time arrived, the momentum was with Sunderland, Trai Hume heading over the bar, from a Granit Xhaka cross, when he should have hit the target. City were looking a little bedraggled.
They were better at the start of the second period and made two quick chances. The first should have given them the lead, Rayan Cherki rolling a cross into the feet of Savinho, but he put it over the bar. With their next attack, City sliced through Sunderland down the opposite wing, and Savinho’s shot was heading for the bottom corner until Robin Roefs stuck out a leg.
Sunderland would not stop coming back at them, Donnarumma called into action to keep out Simon Adingra’s shot. The Italian made an even better one moments later, Enzo Le Fee finding Eliezer Mayenda in a pocket of space on the edge of the area, but having made the angle for a shot, he could not get past the goalkeeper’s giant arms.
The game opened up, attacks answered with attacks, and it took an equally good save from Roefs to tip Josko Gvardiol’s header, from an excellent Rodri cross, round the post.

Finally, Sunderland began to slow down, forced deeper, unable to release the pressure, City began to get the control they needed.
A weaving run from Jérémy Doku, which took him past three defenders, was halted by a last ditch block, as was the follow-up effort from Phil Foden.
City came on strong in the closing stages, pushing and probing, but Sunderland’s resolve would not be broken.
Pep Guardiola speaks to the BBC - ‘The heads are down’
On the performance...
“Tough place to come. The amount of chances we missed in the six-yard box, not difficult ones, we could not convert. We didn’t do what we talked about in the first half but in general it was a really good game.”
On the mood in the dressing room...
“To break the lines, have the composure to break them. It was better second half, the guys did everything. They are a bit heads down but we have to be heads up because in three days we have a difficult game against Chelsea.”
On why they didn’t win...
“We created enough chances, we played good second half. The commitment, the desire, the first half was different. We created enough - the two chances from Savinho in the second half, Jeremy [Doku], Josko [Gvardiol], Phil [Foden] and Erling [Haaland]. We had a lot but unfortunately we could not do it.”
A humdinger of a 0-0
Don't be fooled by the score. MOTD tonight features the best 0-0 you'll see all season. Thank you Sunderland and City for a proper all or nothing scrap to start the New Year right

Trai Hume speaks to Sky Sports - ‘We were outstanding’
On Sunderland’s game plan...
“We try to be as solid as we can and we were outstanding from back to front.”
On the performance...
“We wanted to be bold. When we went to their place, we went there with a bit of naivety and a bit of respect, which they totally deserve but coming here was a different game plan. We wanted to get after them and press and I think we did that. At times we won the ball back we created chances ourselves. I think it was a good game overall.”
On the fans...
“I think every time we play at our home, the fans are incredible. They’re our 12th man, and I think you can see that from our performances and how our home record is this season. They always push us. We make it tough for opposition teams coming here, so we need to keep it that way.”
On what Sunderland can achieve this season...
“We don’t look too far ahead. We take it game by game. I think we’ve done that since the start of the season, and it’s worked well for us so far, so we just take it game by game and we see where the season takes us.”
Bernardo Silva speaks to Sky Sports - ‘We’re not happy’
On the Man City performance...
“In the first half we didn’t play well, we didn’t control the counters and we didn’t move them to find spaces. In the second half we were better. It’s a point, but obviously we’re not happy. But it’s a long season.”
On Sunderland...
“They’re a good team, it’s no coincidence they are doing well.”
On the feeling in the dressing room...
“You cannot be perfect all the time, every half and every minute. We’re still consistent, unfortunately tonight we missed the last step to score our chances, but that’s the game.”
It was Sunderland’s stubborn defence...
...verses Man City’s misfiring attack. And the former stood firm.
Here’s how that result affects the table
b'FULL-TIME: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
And that’s it, a point is a fair result as Sunderland maintain their unbeaten home run. City drop tow points much to Arsenal’s glee.
94 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Great pass from Cherki into Reijnders finds the sub in space. He turns and shoots straight at Roefs, much to the annoyance of Haaland.
92 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
The hosts have everyone behind the ball as City search for a winner. Yet more good defending clears the danger.
90 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
There will be four minutes added time, will there be a goal to break the deadlock? Arsenal will hope not (unless it goes Sunderland’s way...).
88 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
This is a frenetic finale - City are in the Sunderland box, flirting with the six-yard box but cannot get shot in as the hosts throw bodies here there and everywhere...a lot of ‘last-ditch defending’ there. Outstanding defence from Sunderland.
87 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Mukiele and Alderete have been outstanding in the heart of the Sunderland defence and the latter does brilliantly to prevent Haaland from having a one-on-one. That was the dictionary definition of ‘last-ditch defending’...
85 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Sunderland are in the final third but cannot fashion a chance - they look tired. Five minutes to go.
83 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Change for the visitors: Reijnders on for Silva.
81 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Sunderland have all bar two in the box as Doku has the ball on the left - they again defend well and snuff out any hint of a chance. Nervous times for City in terms of the title challenge.
79 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
It’s all City now, you suspect Sunderland will be happy with a point, City most definitely not.
76 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Free-kick for Sunderland just inside their half butCity defend it well. fewer than 15 minutes to go of normal time.
73 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
City hit the post as Gvardiol backheel volleys it. City have looked more more menacing since he replaced O’Reilly. During the time he’s been on the pitch he’s had three attempts on goal, the joint most.
71 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Off comes Adingra, Mundle comes on. It’s a like-for-like change.
69 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Pinball in the Sunderland box. Doku dances in the area before seeing his shot hits the face of Mukiele. The follow up is then headed over the bar by Alderete.
68 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
City have gone up a gear these past few minutes - they are pressing and Sunderland, really for the first time in the match, are on the back foot.
66 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Better from City, they’re trying to up the ante and Silva shoots from outside the box but his shot is blocked by the ever-attentive Alderete.
64 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Outstanding save from Roefs who save point blank from a Gvardiol header in the box. That’s the best chance of the match and once again the big Dutchman helps the argument that he’s been the best goalkeeper in the Premier League this season.
Another stunning save from Robin Roefs! 🤯 pic.twitter.com/hOoopnCrEo
— Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) January 1, 2026
62 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Adingra gets a low cross in from the left that just evades Isidor. Still the search for a goal goes on but this suits Sunderland more than City as it stands. And it certainly suits Arsenal.
Intensity from the hosts
60 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Throw for Sunderland in the final third. But Mukiele goes short. Eventually the ball gets into the box but Dias is alive to the danger.
Here’s a stat - this half has seen the ball in the Man City final third 50 per cent, Sunderland have really taken the game to the visitors.
58 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Sunderland have kept the intensity from the first-half going into this second 45 and City are not finding this easy.
55 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Change for Sunderland: Isidor one for Brobbey
Man City replace O’Reilly with Gvardiol.
53 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Great save from Donnarumma from a Mayenda shot just inside the box. The Sunderland man was played in by a lovely pass from Le Fee and he did everything right before seeing the big Italian get down low to his left.
53 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Good from Sunderland who have seen a plenty of the ball the past three minutes and force Donnarumma into a good save at his near post after good work from Mayenda and Adingra. The fans are making themselves heard once more.
52 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Change for City as Savinho, who had a fine game but injured himself during that last chance, makes way for Doku.
50 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Already City have created more and better chances this half than in the entirity of the first.
49 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Another good chance for City and Savinho who is in acres of space on the left, he charges into the box and unleashes a tame shot that Roefs saves with his feet. Early warning signs for the hosts in this second half.
47 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Great early first chance for City as Cherki gets away from his man on the right before delivering a low ball into the box. Getting on the end of it is Savinho who makes a brilliant run, but his first-time attempt goes over the bar.
45 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Change for City as Rodri returns, Gonzalez is the man to make way.
HALF-TIME: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Guardiola predicted a touch match and that has proved to be the case. Sunderland have had the better chances and could easily be 1-0 up at the break.
46 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Great chance for the hosts to go 1-0 up just before the break. Xhaka puts in a peach of a cross from the left before Hume, free, head over. That would have sent the Stadium of Light mad and be nothing more than Sunderland deserve for a good first 45.
46 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
City are in the Sunderland box and fire two crosses in at pace, alas no one can get on the end of them.
45 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Five minutes added time in the first half.
40 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Adingra is seeing plenty of the ball in good positions but isn’t making the most of them. Again he dithers in possession and City breathe a sigh of relief.
38 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Corner for City, what can they create from this? ‘Not much’ is the answer as Foden’s delivery is deeper than an Oxford philosophy PhD and easy for Sunderland to deal with.
37 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
You can never keep Haaland completely quiet and has a great chance to open the scoring as the ball is squared to him by Foden but he shoots straight at Roefs...the ball then goes striaght to the other end and Mayenda, who is having a lot of joy on the right, forces yet more good defending from the visitors.
Sunderland forcing City mistakes
b'You will not see many teams force as many mistakes and wayward passes from Man City as Sunderland have done so far here. They are rushing City’s players whenever they get the ball at their feet and, as they have managed to do all season, are making it a physical battle too. The hosts have created the best chance of the half too and Brian Brobbey, having done brilliantly to shrug off Ruben Dias, will be disappointed he shot straight at the goalkeeper.
32 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Corner for Sunderland after a Mayenda shot is deflected - City have not taken the sting out of the crowd and the hosts look the more likely to score. Not from this corner they don’t however as the ball is delivered too deep to trouble anyone.
30 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Mukiele is really dominating Haaland, the striker is not in this match at all.
30 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
More good defending from Sunderland after more good work from Savinho on the left. The hosts are defending in numbers and look more than solid.
27 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Gonzalez goes down under a challenge from Brobbey it looks as though he’s going to come off but he’s made of stern stuff and stay on.
The stats show that in spite of seeing only 365 per cent of the ball Sunderland have had seven touches in the opposition box compared to City’s four. The hosts are carrying the greater threat.
24 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
This is good from Sunderland they are winning more battles and Mukiele is bullying Haaland at the moment. The Stadium of Light is a place where they cheer a tackle as much as a goal and they have plenty to cheer at the moment.
22 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Throw in the final third for Sunderland. Mukiele is the man to launch the ball in the box, or not, as he goes for the short one. The ball goes to the left where Adingra falls over like Bambi on ice and the ref, rightly, waves play on.
20 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Yet more good work from Sunderland who, whisper it, are creating the better chances. Mayenda gets the ball on the left before playing in Adingra who takes a touch too many, the ball comes to Hume on the edge of the box and his shot is over the bar. The noise levels are rising at the Stadium of Light.
18 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Great chance for Sunderland as Brobbey gets on the end of a punt up-field and holds of Dias with ease, he’s in the box and shoots low forcing Donnarumma into a good save - yet more promising signs for the hosts who are more than holding their own.
Brian Brobbey shrugs off Ruben Dias with ease but can't beat Gianluigi Donnarumma! 😳 pic.twitter.com/kBVlAYLc3b
— Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) January 1, 2026
16 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Second corner of the match for City and Sunderland defend this better than they did the first, Mukiele heading the danger clear.
14 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
First decent attack from Sunderland sees Hume charge into the box and put the ball toward the six-yard area but great defending from Dias spoils the hosts’ fun. This has been a promising start from Sunderland.
12 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Little goalmouth action to speak of. That will suite the hosts who are defending well.
10 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Sunderland are playing narrow at the back trying to limit City space. City are seeing plenty of the ball but, bar the disallowed goal, haven’t landed a punch yet.
Ake’s knee bothering him
b'This is Nathan Ake’s first start in the league for Manchester City since the start of October and he has already gone down holding his knee. He has come back on after treatment but the knee still seems to be bothering him.
8 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Sunderland have hinted at two attacks in the past minute but have lost the ball in promising positions - they cannot afford to do that. But they are trying to get on the front foot and the crowd are appreciating the intent.
6 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
First corner of the match falls City’s way after good work from Savinho on the left. What can the create from this? ‘A lot’ is the answer as the ball comes into the six-yard box after a flick from Haaland and Silva taps in from a yard. BUT it’s offside, great spot from the linesman there...but for a side that has defended set-pieces well this season, that was poor from Sunderland.
Man City look to have got off to a flyer at the Stadium of Light but Bernardo Silva's opener is ruled out for offside! ❌ pic.twitter.com/EyWOG33GEn
— Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) January 1, 2026
4 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
Early worry for City as Ake, in for his first start since October, falls to the ground after stretching for the ball. He’s holding his left knee. Not the start he or the visitors wanted. He is going to try and continue...
2 mins: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
City have eight wins in a row and have found their scoring boots, this will be tough for the hosts and as I type that City have the first attack on the night and Sunderland head the cross from the right away. Important first 15 minutes for Sunderland, keep City at bay and noise levels loud a the Stadium of Light.
1 min: Sunderland 0 Man City 0
They’re under way at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland are in their famous red and white stripes and City are in their traditional sky blue, no garish or trying-too-hard away kits in sight - hurrah!
The teams are in the tunnel
And we’re moments away from kick-off.
Guardiola speaks to Sky Sports - ‘Tough place to play’
On the challenge facing his side...
“[The Stadium of Light is a] tough place and it means that anyone could win here. Hopefully we can perform.”
On Nathan Ake and Savinho starting...
“Josko [Gvardiol] had a few niggles, an incredible run of playing every three days and Savinho has speed and is fresh.”
On Sunderland’s form and start to the season...
“The set pieces, long balls, second balls, [Granit] Xhaka is involved in the process. It is not just long balls and second balls but they have a good side.”
Sunderland have certainly outdone expectations...
Le Bris.
— Stan Collymore (@StanCollymore) December 31, 2025
Had to mould a lot of incomings late in the day, a stroke of genius getting a wiser and more sensible Xhaka to be the Father of the team, everyone seems to be playing for each other and most importantly, taking the game to teams at home instead of being passive. https://t.co/YGGDBlZg8e
It’s chilly up north
Here’s a nice stat
At the start of today the top eight in the Premier League table were the top eight in in terms of top-flight titles won, which includes Sunderland. Old school, and not a bad metric to use when discussing ‘how big’ a club is...
- Arsenal (13 titles)
- Man City (10)
- Aston Villa (7)
- Liverpool (20)
- Chelsea (6)
- Man Utd (20)
- Sunderland (6)
- Everton (9)
Sunderland’s unbeaten home record to be tested tonight
b'Sunderland’s unbeaten home record will surely come to an end tonight against a rampaging Manchester City team that needs a win to maintain the pressure on leaders Arsenal.
Then again, Arsenal could only draw at the Stadium of Light back in November and Regis le Bris’s side have enjoyed proving people wrong all season. They will not have any inferiority complex given they have also beaten Chelsea and drawn away at Liverpool on their return to the top flight.
Sunderland have only won one game in their last five, whereas City are in the sort of all conquering form that led them to four successive Premier League titles.
Here are those teams in non-social media form
SUNDERLAND XI TO FACE MAN CITY: Roefs, Hume, Mukiele, Alderete, Cirkin, Xhaka, Geertruida, Mayenda, Adingra, Le Fee, Brobbey.
One change to the hosts’ starting line-up from the 1-1 that held on to a draw with Leeds on Sunday. And it’s an attacking one, Eliezer Mayenda comes into the side in place of Chris Rigg.
MAN CITY XI TO FACE SUNDERLAND: Donnarumma, Nunes, Dias, Ake, O’Reilly, Silva, Gonzalez, Savinho, Cherki, Foden, Haaland.
Pep Guardiola has made two changes to the XI who earned a hard-fought win at Forest. Nathan Ake comes in for Josko Gvardiol, his first Premier League start since October. Further forward, Savinho comes in for Tijjani Reijnders. Both the replaced players start on the bench

City looking to close gap on Arsenal
Manchester City head to the Stadium of Light with more than three points at stake — they’re chasing Arsenal at the top of the Premier League. City currently sit five points behind the north Londoners and know victory against Sunderland is a must.
Arsenal ended 2025 emphatically, thumping Aston Villa 4-1 in a statement victory that extended their lead and dealt Villa’s 11-game winning run a blow. That result also put daylight between Arsenal and City at the summit, underscoring how high the stakes are for Pep Guardiola’s side tonight.
Guardiola has been candid ahead of the trip to Sunderland. When asked about the title race, the City manager said it wasn’t a simple two-horse race. “Are you sure [it’s just two for the title]]? A few weeks ago, it was just Arsenal… now it is just one. We will see.”
Guardiola also paid tribute to Sunderland’s fine start to the season that has seen them park themselves in the top eight of the table when many were predicting a big relegation battle.
“They are so tough… the crowd is unbelievable” — reminding everyone that this won’t be a walk in the park,” the City manager said.
City will be bolstered by the return of key midfielder Rodri, who may feature after injury disrupted his season, giving Guardiola a possible tactical boost as he plots to close the gap on Arsenal. Despite squad frustrations and pressure, City’s mentality remains one of resilience — Guardiola has publicly backed his team’s capacity to improve now his squad is healthier.
For Sunderland, this is a chance to rise further up the table and derail one of the title favourites. Le Bris’s side remain unbeaten at the Stadium of Light and will welcome the challenge.
Of last month’s 3-0 defeat to tonight’s opponents Le Bris said: “For me, after the two goals the game was very different. They are smart and able to manage different scenarios... We had more chances to get in their half but they were able to counter-attack and create more chances. We’ll see tomorrow.”

City to recall Jahmai Simpson-Pusey after disappointing Celtic loan
Manchester City will recall Jahmai Simpson-Pusey from Celtic this month, with German club Cologne among several clubs who want him for the second half of the season.
Simpson-Pusey, 20, was a regular in Pep Guardiola’s match-day squad last season and made six senior appearances, including three starts, before he was loaned to the Scottish champions for regular game time.
But the England Under-20 centre-back has not broken into the first team at Parkhead and will head back to City before his next move is decided, with the defender set to be one of the most sought-after loans in January.
Cologne, 11th in the Bundesliga, are interested in adding Simpson-Pusey to their back line for the second half of the season. French club Strasbourg are also monitoring his situation and have enjoyed success in the English market after signing Julio Enciso, Martial Godo and Ben Chilwell from the Premier League. Parma in Italy have also registered an interest.
Championship clubs are also set to approach City over a move for Simpson-Pusey. Last summer, Swansea City and Derby County made bids before a move to Celtic was agreed.
Guardiola praised Simpson-Pusey last season for his performances at centre-back, highlighting his composure and ability to win duels.
Jack Grealish and Vitor Reis are among the City players who are out on loan at the moment. Sverre Nypan, Claudio Echeverri, Divin Mubama and Max Alleyne are some of the highly rated young players who have been allowed out. Guardiola tends to work with a small squad and not use the January market, although last season had to sign Abdukodir Khusanov, Omar Marmoush, Nico González and Reis.
“Always the club took the decisions which I supported 100 per cent,” Guardiola said. “When it is going bad I look at myself and the team and what we can do better. It’s always that.
“At that moment last season, with four Premier Leagues in a row and still have energy and players, and after what happened happened, sometimes you cannot anticipate the situation.”
