Real Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal returned to squad training on Friday and appears close to making his comeback, with Los Blancos set to travel to Saudi Arabia for the Spanish Super Cup next week. Carvajal did not complete the full session with the group, however, making his presence in Sunday’s home match against Betis unlikely.

Carvajal has missed the past two months with a knee injury sustained during El Clásico against Barcelona. His absence, and the leadership he provides, has been felt, and Real Madrid are now in need of momentum once again, as pressure mounts with Xabi Alonso seemingly coaching for his job over the coming matches.

If Carvajal is not ready to start when Real Madrid face Atlético de Madrid next week, Fede Valverde is expected to slot in on the right side of the defensive line.
