Michigan hired Kerry Coombs as its new special teams coordinator Dec. 6, but the Wolverines have since changed head coaches.
As Michigan's new head football coach, Kyle Whittingham, introduced himself and his coaching staff Jan. 2 at the Wolverines' men's basketball game, he confirmed that longtime Colerain High School head coach Kerry Coombs will remain in Ann Arbor as special teams coordinator.
Coombs was hired as Michigan's special teams coordinator in early December. The school announced Dec. 26 that Whittingham would replace Sherrone Moore as head coach.
Coombs was most recently the special teams coordinator and cornerbacks coach for the Cincinnati Bearcats, from 2022-24.
"Coach Kerry Coombs is a proven, exceptional football coach, and we're thrilled to welcome him to our program," then-Wolverines head coach Moore said Dec. 6, per mgoblue.com. "Kerry's leadership of our special teams will be invaluable. ... We're proud to have Kerry, Holly, and their family join the Michigan Football family."
Coombs, a 1979 Colerain graduate, compiled a 161-34 record as head coach with the Cardinals. He led Colerain to a Div. I state title in 2004 and 10 playoff appearances.
Coombs started his college coaching career at UC under then-head coach Brian Kelly in the 2006 International Bowl. Coombs declined an opportunity to go with Kelly to Notre Dame, opting to stay with the Bearcats.
Coombs' five seasons at UC (from 2007 to 2011) included three as associate head coach.
Coombs coached defensive backs for the Ohio State Buckeyes for six seasons before leaving for the NFL's Tennessee Titans in Jan. 2018.
Coombs returned to OSU in 2020 as co-defensive coordinator, becoming the highest-paid assistant coach on Ryan Day’s staff at that time.
