FC Bayern’s gaffer is fascinated by one specific tenet of the modern game
Bayern Munich is looking nearly unstoppable under Vincent Kompany, which is a complete surprise given his last job was relegation from the Premier League. There is one thing that carried over from his Burnley days, and it’s one of the things he loves most about football.
“Creativity. Most definitely. I love it!”, Kompany said (via @iMiaSanMia). “I was a defender – my job was to stop creativity. But I spent my whole youth playing on the street, so I was fascinated by creativity. That’s why I used to go to the stadium. Even at Bayern, the big names are always associated with creativity. Beckenbauer – the way he moved forward with the ball, played passes, utilised space. Ribéry, Robben: sheer magic. And the strikers – this variety of goals. These players could do things that normal people – including me – can’t do. And I want to protect that.”
Imagine loving creativity and your team includes Michael Olise, Joshua Kimmich, Harry Kane, Luis Díaz, Lennart Karl, and Jamal Musiala to name a few. Similar to Julian Nagelsmann, the Belgian coach has good ideas but he needed the players to execute it (at least Kompany doesn’t tinker too much). Suffice to say, Kompany already had the makings of a world class coach.
