Real Madrid’s plans for the summer transfer window are beginning to take shape even though we are still only in January.

A centre-back is seen as the top priority, given that David Alaba is expected to leave and question marks remain over Antonio Rudiger’s future.

At the same time, Real Madrid also intend to sign a new midfielder – a player who can control and dictate proceedings from the middle while also adding that bit of creative element.

Kees Smit of AZ Alkmaar has been highlighted as the key target, but one player who continues to remain on Real Madrid’s agenda is Manchester City superstar Rodri.

Real Madrid have not forgotten about Rodri

Indeed, according to MARCA, Real Madrid will look to take advantage of Rodri’s contract situation at Manchester City in the summer this year.

After all, the veteran Spaniard’s current deal runs until the summer of 2027, meaning he will be entering the final 12 months of his deal at the end of the season.

Talks over a renewal have taken place but an agreement has not yet been finalised, leaving the doors ajar for Real Madrid to make a move to try and sign the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner at a lower cost.

The past few months have not been easy for Rodri, with injuries hampering the midfielder, who will turn 30 years old come June.

But he made his return earlier this week against Sunderland and looked like he had not missed a beat, showcasing his undisputed quality.

Given what he offers, Manchester City consider Rodri an indispensable player. But if a renewal agreement is not reached, the Premier League giants will be forced to consider his sale in the summer, with Real Madrid waiting to strike.
