Liverpool's hopes of signing Antoine Semenyo took a critical hit last week, but the Reds are now reportedly considering a new attacking option and he's actually a former Golden Ball winner.

Richard Hughes and the recruitment team on Merseyside don't just sit around, they're constantly considering different transfer options. They've got plenty of favoured targets up their sleeve.

One of which is a young player who has the capability of performing to a similar level to Semenyo, except the Reds would have him around for a lot longer and he's already quite a decorated star.

Liverpool switch their focus to Maamma

According to TeamTalk, the club has been scouting an up-and-coming winger in the Championship by the name of Othmane Maamma - a 20-year-old talent who is playing for Watford at the moment.

The Moroccan forward joined the London club last summer and his performances have encouraged Liverpool to send down some scouts to get a better feel of what he's like to watch in-person.

Across 811 minutes played this season in England's second-tier competition, he's scored three goals and got an assist, which is an impressive impact for a developing player who isn't playing regularly.

Outside of his club form, one of the main reasons why Liverpool and other clubs such as Manchester United, Newcastle United, Brighton, Brentford and Sunderland are interested, is because of how he's coped playing at an international level, excelling for Morocco in the recent Under-20 World Cup.

In not only playing a large role in his side's efforts throughout the tournament, being trusted to play 521 minutes across seven matches, he also captained the team and made an attacking contribution in five of the games. As Morocco lifted the trophy in the final, he also received the Golden Ball - recognising his outstanding campaign and laying down a serious marker that he's a massive talent.

In a stylistic sense, he's actually quite similar to Antoine Semenyo, in the sense that he can play on both sides of the pitch really comfortably, and Liverpool have always admired that trait in a player.

Arne Slot has emphasised on more than one occasion that Liverpool need to be more like Paris Saint Germain, utilising players with high pace and becoming more unpredictable as an attacking unit. Just as Ousmane Dembele, Khvicha Khvaratskehlia, Bradley Barcola and Desire Doue all switch positions when they're playing on the break, talents like Maamma would give the Reds a similar dynamic.

Of course, he's still only 20 years old, and the Hornets only signed him from Montpellier in the summer, so it's understandable that their stance is that they're 'not planning a January sale'.

Nonetheless, he should definitely be considered alongside the likes of Yan Diomande and others that Liverpool appear to be shortlisting as potential attacking signings that can assist in evolving the team.
