REPORT: TCU QB transfer Josh Hoover commits to Indiana

The redshirt junior departs after four years in Fort Worth.

After weeks of speculation, multiple reports Sunday evening revealed that TCU redshirt junior quarterback Josh Hoover, who announced Dec. 18 that he would enter the transfer portal after four years with the Horned Frogs, has committed to play his final college football season at Indiana. Hoover will be the likely successor to Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, who projects as a top pick in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft. A three-year starter at TCU, Hoover took over the role in 2023 and concludes his TCU career with 9,629 passing yards, 71 touchdowns, 33 interceptions, 771 completions and a 65.2 percent completion rate.

Hoover took over the starting job after Chandler Morris suffered a knee injury midway through the 2023 season. The Heath, Texas native and former three-star recruit ended his redshirt freshman campaign with 2,206 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions. In 2024, Hoover took his game to another level, breaking TCU’s single-season passing yards record with 3,949 while adding 27 touchdowns to 11 interceptions. Hoover, who has appeared in 36 games over four years with the Horned Frogs, tossed a career-best 29 touchdown passes in 2025, but had 13 interceptions and finished with 3,472 passing yards.

An All-Big 12 Honorable Mention in 2024, Hoover earned New Mexico Bowl MVP honors, leading TCU to a 9-4 season that culminated in a victory over Louisiana. The Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week against Colorado, Hoover threw for 275 yards and four scores as the Horned Frogs beat the Buffaloes 35-21. The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder will enter next season as college football’s leading returning passer with nearly 10,000 yards to his name. It’s the most significant transfer portal loss for the Horned Frogs, who saw offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and associate head coach Kendal Briles leave for South Carolina last month.

Hoover redshirted at TCU in 2022, when Max Duggan led the Horned Frogs to a 13-2 record and the College Football Playoff National Championship. The former Rockwall quarterback will take over at Indiana, where he’ll be coached by Curt Cignetti and aim to lead the Hoosiers back to the CFP in 2026. Indiana is currently 14-0 and in the semifinals after a massive victory over Alabama in the Rose Bowl Game.
