We’ve got one final bit of 2025-related silverware to award.
It’s that time again, we’d like you to pick out your Reading player of the month, this time for December 2025. A reminder that this vote doesn’t cover the Royals’ last two games – home wins over Burton Albion and Stockport County – so for the purposes of this voting, pretend they haven’t happened yet.
Reading’s five December games were, er… a mixed bag. For once that’s not a euphemism for “really bad but I’d rather not be mean” – we did actually see the full spread of performance between terrible and excellent. Sometimes in the same game. Sometimes even in the same half.
The first two games (Peterborough United at home, Bradford away) were Reading’s two worst performances in the league this season, in my book. The Royals responded very well at the start of the festive period however, beating Luton Town late on at home before sticking four past Plymouth Argyle in a chaotic Boxing Day encounter at Home Park. The year was rounded off by a trip to Posh in which the Royals were overrun for most of the game, but at least escaped with a point.
So who was your individual standout? Before we get into that, a word on the previous month’s winner. Charlie Savage was your November POTM, with 63% of the vote. Paudie O’Connor (12%) came second, ahead of Joel Pereira (9%), Kelvin Abrefa (8%) and Dez Williams (7%).
Who’ll be joining him as December’s winner? Read on for the candidates and make sure to vote in our poll at the bottom of the article.
Daniel Kyerewaa
Average rating: 5.6 / Man of the match awards: 1st (Peterborough United H), Joint-3rd (Peterborough United A)
December was when we started to see a lot more from summer signing Kyerewaa, following a slow start to the season. He was a more consistent threat than before, winning the penalty that Lewis Wing netted against Luton Town and opening the scoring at Peterborough United, and finished inside the top three of our MOTM voting twice – against the same club as it happens.
Jack Marriott
Average rating: 5.6 / Man of the match awards: 3rd (Luton Town H)
Although he only got one top-three MOTM voting finish in December, Marriott was again consistently among the goals. He contributed two of his own (Luton at home, Plymouth away) and turned provider for two more, setting up Kamari Doyle against Plymouth and Kyerewaa at Peterborough United.
Joel Pereira
Average rating: 6.0 / Man of the match awards: 2nd (Bradford City A), 2nd (Plymouth Argyle A), 1st (Peterborough United A)
Reading had to rely on their goalkeeper a number of times in December, particularly in the two away games that closed out the month. Pereira helped steady the ship at Home Park, making a crucial penalty save at 1-3, and was a real standout a few days later when Posh laid siege to the Royals’ goal but – crucially – were limited to just the equaliser.
Derrick Williams
Average rating: 6.0 / Man of the match awards: 1st (Bradford City A), 1st (Luton Town H), 3rd (Plymouth Argyle A)
Williams’ performances in December might go a bit under the radar due to how well Finley Burns has filled in at centre-back recently, but the veteran defender’s contributions shouldn’t be ignored. His consistency is evidenced by having more MOTM awards than anyone else and a higher average rating than any other outfielder.
He even made a couple of vital contributions in the final third. It was Williams who played in Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan for a late winner against Luton Town, and Williams who won the game-defining penalty and red card at Plymouth on Boxing Day. Defenders who can be that much of a nuisance in the opposition box at set-pieces are worth their weight in gold.
Lewis Wing
Average rating: 5.4 / Man of the match awards: 1st (Plymouth Argyle A)
A bit of an outside shout perhaps, but Wing deserves an inclusion on this shortlist for his goal return. He was Reading’s top scorer in December, finding the net three times, as well as setting up Marriott for the Royals’ fourth at Home Park.
Just don’t be too swayed by his January winner against Stockport!
