Sky Germany reports that Chelsea have an option to recall Borussia Dortmund defender Aaron Anselmino from his loan at the club.

After joining the club on a temporary deal in the summer, there is a special clause in the deal which means that the Premier League side can recall the Argentine in the winter window.

This was confirmed by Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl during their training camp in Marbella:

“We are planning with him for the second half of the season. Ultimately, however, it is of course a matter of contract negotiations. Chelsea also has certain expectations, given the situation we were in at the time.”

Later adding:

“I believe it makes sense for everyone involved that Aarón also plays for Borussia Dortmund in the second half of the season, to help us, himself, and ultimately Chelsea as well.”

Ultimately, the future of Anselmino will depend on the decision of the future Chelsea head coach, following Enzo Maresca’s departure. With Strasbourg head coach Liam Rosenior set to become the new head coach of the London side, if he sees potential in the Argentine, he could ask for him to return to the club.

Will Dortmund miss the Chelsea defender?

After a slow start to life in Germany, Anselmino’s form really picked up in recent weeks before the winter break.

Especially with Dortmund lacking quality depth in their defence, the 20-year-old offers just that in Niko Kovac’s back three alongside Nico Schlotterbeck.
