When Kansas City’s legendary tight end finishes his career, he’ll have another waiting.

Kelce co-hosts New Heights, one of the top sports podcasts in the country, with his brother. He also has appeared in television and film cameos and hosted the Are You Smarter Than a Fifth-Grader? reboot for Prime Video.
Fans may not often hear Kelce break down the granular elements of a football game, but it sounds as if that’s where his interests lie as he potentially entertains talks with broadcast networks.
And, according to Marchand, he will have very particular expectations of his next employer.
“He’s a guy who is only going to take a No. 1 job, to me,” Marchand said of Kelce. “He’s going to get anywhere from 10 to 20 million, because he’s Travis Kelce.”
Dave Merritt Is Chiefs’ Best Internal Choice if Spagnuolo Leaves | KC Kingdom
Merritt would stay with the Giants until the 2017 season, when he would depart for another coaching role as the defensive backs coach with the Arizona Cardinals. This was a short-lived stint with Spagnuolo and Merritt teaming up once again in the 2019 season, joining the Chiefs as the defensive backs coach, and he has maintained the role since. Furthering his qualifications are the two Super Bowls won during this time, as well as the consistent performance of a secondary that has gone through consistent offseason changes.
While Spagnuolo understandably gets all of the credit for any defensive success, the ability to delegate to a strong staff is obviously a part of what has made the Chiefs’ defense so consistent. Under Spagnuolo, the defense gave up the 10th fewest yards in the league in 2025 despite having consistent injuries, little pass rush, and underperforming veterans in the secondary.
3 Questions That The Kansas City Chiefs Must Answer In 2026 | Sportscasting Bets
Q3: What Are They Doing About The Skill Positions?
It is no secret that the Chiefs have failed to surround Patrick Mahomes with the weapons necessary to be successful. Since Tyreek Hill’s departure in 2022, Kansas City hasn’t had a receiver top the 1,000 yard mark in any season, and they haven’t had a 1,000 yard rusher since Kareem Hunt’s rookie season in 2017. Add in the likely retirement of Travis Kelce, and the situation remains dire for Mahomes and the offense.
How will they improve in that aspect? There are only a handful of free agent wide receiver options that would give the Chiefs a clear #1 option, so they may have to go the route of a trade to improve at the position. But there are some attractive running backs that should be available, including Breece Hall and Kenneth Walker III.
These Three Chiefs Were Kansas City’s Biggest Disappointments This Season | ChiefsRoundtable
Isiah Pacheco, running back. We were told that Pacheco was finally healthy this year, so it was natural to expect the kind of big performance he seemed capable of and go beyond the occasionally flashes of promise.
Instead, it never happened, and you have to wonder what will happen to Pacheco next year. Running back Brashard Smith played well in the final game of the season against the Raiders after Pacheco was put on injured reserve, and he’ll get a longer look in camp this summer.
Pacheco always seems to be nicked up somehow, but the Chiefs simply can’t afford to carry him next season if he’s not bringing it in every game.

Philip Rivers believes he can coach in NFL but not pursuing jobs | ESPN
Rivers went 0-3 as a starter down the stretch as the Colts fell short of making the postseason. But he also poured into the team’s younger quarterbacks during his time in Indianapolis, raising the specter of him perhaps doing so on a full-time basis. Rivers thinks he could pull it off.
“I do think, as humbly as I can say it, that I could coach at this level,” Rivers said. “I know enough about the game and about the guys, and from a leadership standpoint, camaraderie, all that comes with it. But, again, that’s not something that I’m sitting here pursuing. If anything I learned the last four weeks, it’s take it one day at a time. Because there was a Sunday afternoon, I had no thought of being in Indianapolis the next day. Then, 24 hours later, I was here.”
Joe Schoen staying as Giants GM after another awful season | New York Post
So, how did he survive? When Daboll was dismissed on Nov. 10, Mara said “We feel like Joe has assembled a good young nucleus of talent, and we look forward to its development.’’
Ownership went against the wishes of fans who wanted Schoen out.
Clearly, ownership believes the sad results are not entirely commensurate with the assembled talent on the roster. Schoen drafted Dart, wide receiver Malik Nabers, running backs Tyrone Tracy and Cam Skattebo and edge rusher Abdul Carter. Schoen also traded for outside linebacker Brian Burns, who finished second in the NFL in 2025 with 16.5 sacks. Schoen gave contract extensions to left tackle Andrew Thomas and nose tackle Dexter Lawrence, first-round picks from the Dave Gettleman regime. Schoen also cleaned up an inherited salary cap mess.

5 things we learned from the Chiefs’ season-ending loss to the Raiders
2. Chris Oladokun and Shane Buechele are not the answer at backup quarterback
The Chiefs will be in the market for a new backup quarterback — and possibly a new third-stringer — this offseason. If this game taught us anything, it’s that Oladokun and Buchele are not NFL-caliber options. And if we’re being honest, Gardner Minshew didn’t exactly look electric before injuring his knee in Week 16 against the Tennessee Titans.
With the status of franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes — who tore his ACL against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 15 — still uncertain, the Chiefs must proceed as if he will not be available to start the 2026 season.
That reality raises the bar. This can’t just be a “break glass in case of emergency” option. Kansas City needs someone capable of winning games and keeping the team competitive until Mahomes returns — however long that takes.
