Monday Big Ten Recap: Nebraska Tops OSU

Recap all the Big Ten action from Monday.

The Big Ten had three games on Monday. Two of the games went down to the wire, and the third ended up being a blowout in East Lansing.

Let’s take a look at what happened.

Game of the Night:

No. 10 Nebraska Cornhuskers 72, Ohio State Buckeyes 69

Another night and another Huskers win. Nebraska followed up last Friday night’s win over Michigan State with another quality win on Monday, going on the road and beating Ohio State. Nebraska controlled most of the night, but it ended up going down to the final seconds, when the Huskers hit a few big looks to secure the 72-69 victory. Braden Frager led the way with 15 points and six rebounds. Rienk Mast also had 12 points in the win.

Nebraska improved to 15-0 overall and 4-0 in Big Ten play with the win. It was the program’s 19th win dating back to last season, which is the nation’s longest win streak by four games. It was also a valuable one in both the Big Ten race and Nebraska’s pursuit of a quality seed in March. Going on the road in the Big Ten is never easy, let alone against a top 40 opponent in the Buckeyes. Yet Nebraska got the job done, even in the hangover of Friday’s massive win over Michigan State.

On the other side, Ohio State fell to 10-4 overall and 2-2 in Big Ten play with the loss. It will be a painful one for Buckeye fans to swallow, given how close the team was to getting its first major win of the season. Instead, Ohio State will be sent back to the drawing board with a challenging slate ahead. Notably, the loss was enough of a hit to drop the Buckeyes out of the field in TRank’s latest bracketology.

The Huskers will now prepare for a challenging game against Indiana on the road on Saturday. Ohio State will try and bounce back on the road against Oregon on Thursday.

The Rest:

No. 12 Michigan State Spartans 80, USC Trojans 51

After getting blown out by Michigan on Friday, USC continued its gauntlet on Monday, facing off against Michigan State in East Lansing. Unfortunately for Trojan fans, things largely ended the same way, with USC getting blasted in a blowout loss. Jaxon Kohler led the way with for the Spartans with 16 points and eight rebounds. Coen Carr also had 18 points and six rebounds in the win.

The win pushed Michigan State to 13-2 overall and 3-1 in Big Ten play, while USC fell to 12-3 overall and 1-3 in Big Ten play with the loss. The Spartans will now prepare for Northwestern at home on Thursday. USC will get Minnesota on the road on Friday.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights 88, Oregon Ducks 85 (OT)

It’s been a horrific season so far for the Scarlet Knights. The team entered Monday night’s game at just 7-7 overall and had yet to beat a top 100 KenPom opponent. However, Rutgers fans got a reprieve from those struggles, at least for a night, as Rutgers shocked Oregon in Pitscataway. Oregon appeared to be in control for most of the evening, but fell apart in the closing minutes, allowing Rutgers a route to victory. Tariq Francis was fantastic off the bench, finishing with 30 points, four assists, and four rebounds.

Rutgers improved to 8-7 overall and 1-3 in Big Ten play with the win, while Oregon fell to 8-7 overall and 1-3 in Big Ten play with the loss. The Scarlet Knights will now prepare for Illinois on the road on Thursday. The Ducks will prepare for Ohio State at home on Thursday. Unfortunately, this loss probably ends Oregon’s NCAA hopes.
