J-Dubbs move to 4-0 in league play with 75-48 victory over Charlotte.
CHARLOTTE — The last time Keyshawn Summerville played at Charlotte High School he had one of the most memorable moments of his basketball career.
The Sexton star guard hit the game-winning 3 from beyond half-court in the regional final last March while playing a role in a special season for the J-Dubbs.Summerville was back in that spot Tuesday, Jan. 6 and played a role in Sexton taking a big early step in its quest to claim a league championship.
Summerville finished with a game-high 22 points for the J-Dubbs in their 75-48 victory over Charlotte.
Willie Brown was also in double figures with 11 points for Sexton (7-1, 4-0) as it won its seventh straight since a season-opening loss to East Lansing. It also marked the latest league win in double figures by the J-Dubbs, who have an average margin of victory of 23.5 points in CAAC White play.
"It was pretty big," Summerville said of the J-Dubbs' latest win. "We just looked at it as another game and came out here and handled business. That's what we do. It was kind of a statement win, but we're focused on bigger things than this."
Those high hopes for Sexton are centered on the accomplishments the program has made the last couple seasons. Last year's run to the Division 2 state quarterfinal that came thanks in part to Summerville's clutch shot in the regional final has helped create the lofty aspirations for the J-Dubbs this season.
"Just the progress we've had the last two years leading up to now (is big)," Sexton coach Deleon Dearing said. "Winning the conference when we hadn't done that since 2011 and then winning districts and regionals and then this year, the sky's the limit. Hopefully we go on a good run and go farther than we did last year."
Summerville said the J-Dubbs have carried over the momentum from last year's deep run this winter while establishing themselves as one of the top teams in Greater Lansing and beyond. And with a senior-laden roster, Sexton hopes to get a championship ending.
"We're all locked in," Summerville said. "We've got eight or nine seniors and we're just ready to get that state (championship)."
The first step in that process is winning a league title. Sexton helped keep itself in a good position to do that with its dominant win Tuesday. The J-Dubbs pushed their lead to double figures in the second quarter before breaking things open in the second half.
Tyler Bowzer had 10 points and AJ Spencer-Sprattlin scored nine points to lead Charlotte (7-2, 2-2).
